Cavalry FC earned a 2-1 win against Pumas UNAM in the first leg of their Round One series as the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup continued on Thursday at Starlight Stadium in Langford, British Columbia, Canada.
The victory marks a first for a Canadian Premier League side in the Concacaf Champions Cup. The North Star Cup winners are also the first CPL team to defeat a Liga MX club.
Jay Herdman had a promising look on goal in the 24β, striking from midfield, but Pumas goalkeeper Alex Padilla was there to capture the ball, as the home side pushed for the opening goal.
Marco Carducci swatted away a dangerous ball into the box in the 33β, after Γngel Rico looked to connect with one of his teammates on a Pumas UNAM corner kick.
Sergio Camargo had a promising drive into the box in the 38β, striking a pass into the center of the penalty area but Padilla was there to cut off the attack.
Santiago LΓ³pez placed Pumas UNAM in the lead in the 44′, striking off a rebound after a blocked attempt from Marco Carducci.
Charles Trafford tied the match in the 57β, striking inside the six-yard box to connect on a corner kick service from Ali Musse.
Tobias Warschewski delivered a moment of brilliance to place Cavalry in the lead at the 80β, controlling the ball with his right foot to set up his lethal strike. Herdman earned the assist off a header to redirect a cross from right field by Caniggia Elva.
Warschewski’s goal for Cavalry is the first scored by a German player in the Concacaf Champions Cup while playing for a Canadian team since 2018.
Elva is the fourth player from Saint Lucia to feature in a Concacaf Champions Cup match since 2018 and the first to do so for a Canadian team.
Cavalry’s victory over Pumas was the eighth win by a Canadian team against a Mexican side in the Concacaf Champions Cup (11D-20L) since the current format was introduced in 2008.
The previous victory by a Canadian team in the competition was Vancouver Whitecaps with a 5-0 win over Real EspaΓ±a in 2023.
Cavalry provided the first successful comeback against a Mexican side in the CCC since Honduras Progreso in 2016.
The two sides will meet again in the second leg next Thursday in Mexico City. The aggregate winner will advance to the Round of 16.

Ojala se levante esta semana el Pumas de Piero Quispe
Goes to show that CPL have so much potential for growth. Cavalry will definitely get smoked at the Olimpico, but they'll also get experience playing a side that will now field more of their senior team in a playing ground of 50k+ fans. That alone is priceless for the future of Canadian football.
