The trend of American players spending their formative years in Germany goes back decades, to the likes of Eric Wynalda, Claudio Reyna and Landon Donovan, just to name a few. The German path is now more common, but why are there so many young Americans in the Bundesliga?

  1. Another reason is that Germany is effectively little America, there are so many American military bases here it houses the largest populations of Americans not living in America in the world already, meaning most of us never have to learn German and can adapt to certain things in the culture extremely quickly. Germany is an Americans perfect intro into Europe

  2. Because bundesliga is not a competitive league. You can develop players knowing that BM will win it every year like 2 months before the league ends. So you can afford to try players from every nation. Another thing is American players are cheap.

  3. The United States has a long ambition of making itself a football nation since hosting the World Cup in 1994. However, because of the weird way of American football learning (and they don't even call it "football"), very few American talents really come out of the American academic ranks. Rather, those who truly love football left early for their potential to develop in Europe. This resulted in a lot of American youngsters are now spreading across Europe. The United States really has large pool of talents but they are hampered by poor understanding of the American football makers themselves.

  4. IMO a huge part of this is also that the only German club who really can afford to regularly buy well known top level players with the current transfer fees is Bayern Munich. Some otherTeams like Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig can afford to pay muc h for a player at times, but not too often. Because of that the teams need to be creative with their transfers and getting a young prospect player from the US with the chance to have him play for your team for 2 – 3 years and then selling him making good money on the transfer market is just one of their ways of being creative.

  5. There's also a lot of cultural connection between Germany and the US, due to a large German population in the US, and more recently the military bases. It's hard to find an American who doesn't know someone stationed in Germany at some point in their life, given that we have something like 40,000 troops deployed in Germany.

  6. So unfair
America is a non footballing nation
Have 0 influence on how the sport has evolved
Hate that these coddled babies are getting an opportunity compared to other footballing nations

  7. Love seeing our players get out of the US Soccer chum bucket – which is a mess – and moving to Europe and actually getting developed. Until our best athletes choose soccer as their primary sport; we'll always lag behind a bit, but no reason we can't be a top 10 side internationally. None.

  8. I hate Americans man just play in your own country u have basketball, baseball and most importantly NFL ,other poor countries don't have the opportunity so I say they should ban American from playing in the budesliga0

  9. Another big reason is that Germans speak and understand English pretty well in general, and German is pretty easy to learn for an English speaker anyway. In Italy or Spain or France they would get much more difficulty to be understood because the majority of people there are bad at English or don't make any effort to speak it.

  10. a few more factors: German Bundesliga Clubs likes to sign young Players, train them and sell them later. its benificiary for all Parties involved and with the Fair Play Financial Rules for Football Clubs in Germany its the best Way to earn Money even if you dont win anything.
so, its not only young American Players that get signed by big German Clubs, its talented Youth from around the World and with the Rules in Place: its impossible to sign a Ronaldo or Messi because if you loose the league 1 Time your Club is done for Financial Reasons.

  11. Because they don’t judge you on your country but on your talent. I heard Bartomeu was offered Davies from The Whitecaps but refused to buy him because he is Canadian.

  12. This is why the US is going to dominate the Concacaf soon. While young American players are practically free young Mexican players are way over valued even though they are talented

  13. rubencitostyle
and what do you know? Adams just scored the goal that put RB Leipzig in the semifinals of the champions league – granted, it was through a deflection but still he was playing in a big game and not very many people can play at the world stage

  14. Thats practically the opposite of their neighbors. They put hefty prices on young players, never went to sell them without a good deal, never loan them or anything. There was a thing called the gentlemans pact that says clubs owners have control over decisions, so it is really tough for young mexican players to go to Europe in general.
