I swear, every time I learn about a British versus American term or pronunciation difference, it's always the British who come up with it, then when the Americans like it and use it, the British either get upset that the Americans use it, or just arbitrarily change it later, and then blame the Americans for being inconsistent.
Certain parts of Ireland aswell , over here football generally means Gaelic , but i know a lot of people who still just call them bith football and clarify which they mean

In Australia or at least in Sydney football (soccer) has taken over so much where I live in schools and most of us just cal it football
