  1. What most people don’t know because it’s always overshadowed by Liverpool and Man Utd rivalry is the respect and admiration between Gerrard and Rooney. To be honest when I found out this long time ago I was surprised too

  2. Imagine talking about football every day all day? I saw Gary ask Paul scholes for a program which takeaway was his favourite. Why would anyone care? Both these two were very ordinary players. I’m unsure how Wayne broke records he never was top scorer in the league other than one season. Most seasons he scored between 7 and 12 goals.

    This interview is pretty drab

  3. The last of his kind.
Roy of the Rovers with extra fire in his belly. His debut goal v Arsenal. His talk to the ref and volley v Newcastle. His bicycle kick against City. Comic book stuff.

  4. Bald Rooney and Skinny Ronaldo were absolute monsters for UTD. People talk abt Mbappe Haaland but these went toe to toe in toughest league against Arsenal Invincible and Mou Chelsea era.

  5. I feel sorry for him. Just a little too late joining and left with a weaker England team. Tried to carry the team. Nearly did too, with his grit & determination to score – from anywhere. And sure enough he admits here he thinks England could’ve gone on to win the tournament if he didn’t get injured – I though exactly the same thing at the time. He was that lethal in front of goal at that time. A bitter end.

Whilst Rooney had a great array of skills, one of his most world class skills was his poise in front of goal – unflappable. Not only that, but his determination… a lot of strikers you’d wonder if they’ll manage a shot, whereas Rooney was always so determined that you know he’d shrug off players and get a shot on target – it made him so dangerous around goal. His solo goals for England, his unstoppable near post goals from the edge of the box. Wish he’d had a better team.

His other skills were just world class. Sharp and quick off the mark when young. His passing and shooting accuracy, but more importantly he could do it with pace at the highest level. Read the game so well – he and Beckham would have to slow it down to allow others to catch up and get on the same page. One touch and two footed were still a rarity back in those days.

  6. The fact that Rooney, Uniteds highest ever goal scorer, says Gerrard, who is probably Liverpool’s greatest ever servant, was the best player he played with for England when the likes of Scholes and Lampard were there, it pretty much settles the debate I’d say.

  7. He's a Man U legend, speaking in an interview to another Man U legend, and said a Liverpool legend is the best he's played. Lol. Shows you how great Gerrard is. Nice lad, Rooney.

  8. Rooney is the top scorer for England and for Man Utd. You cannot say he is not one of te best ever player in english football. Steven Gerrard, probably the best midfielder out there in his peak.
I mean, how the hell a team with Shearer, Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham, Terry, Ferdinand have never won anything for England is beyond me.

  9. Nice mention of Gerrard. Even as a Toffee and Former Manc, Rooney had the decency to know class when he saw it. Both Gerrard and Owen both spoke very highly of Rooney in their books.
