If you watch closely, he did not give a play on, he just let them do a quick start on the free kick. Which refs typically don’t do when they have their yellow card out but it’s still very different than allowing for a “play on” as the announcers said
The ref had nothing to do with the final result of the game. Yes, he made mistakes, but the US team just lacks quality and if you don't score your opportunities, then you lose.
In this particular play, an US player should have be in front of the ball right away to prevent Uruguay from playing on fast. Uruguayan players do that all the time because, guess what, they are smarter.
