  2. Either that's some of the worst refereeing I've ever seen, or the MLS is rigged. No way he watched that back and still said penalty. Is it a coincidence that it's in extra time and Muller hasn't gotten his debut goal yet? The MLS is all about $, it's in their best interest that Muller is loved by fans and doesn't disappoint, having to wait three games for a debut goal just wasn't gonna cut it 🤷

  3. For all who say that wasnt a PK… it was. I find it stupid also but the defender, unintentionaly, touches the attackers foot which in turn hits against his own calf/knee and trips him up. As sad as I find it, it is still considered a Pk, have seen it multiple times in the big leagues.

  4. The player is able to continue running normally for one second after the alleged contact at 5:29. He stands with his left leg on the ground and pulls his right leg after him – a completely normal running movement. Then, in the middle of the movement, with the opponent already one meter behind him, the player suddenly decides at 5:30 to stop pulling his right leg and take off with his left leg, because he sees that the ball is already far away and he would rather have taken the penalty. He flies through the air and throws himself forward theatrically as if dodging a landmine.

I've been watching soccer for 30 years and have seen many dives – rarely has a dive been as clear and blatant as this one. However, I've never seen such a dive awarded as a penalty AFTER VIDEO REVIEW. I'm German and only looked here because of Thomas Müller, but if that's standard practice in the MLS, you can play without a referee at all. That was one of the most ridiculous refereeing performances I've ever seen. And by the way: Even if there was contact somewhere at 5:29, it wasn't a foul – neither in the penalty area nor outside. The defender was moving completely normally and didn't run into the Whitecaps player; if anything, the Whitecaps player was running into the defender. In soccer, there is no rule that defenders have to dematerialize themselves as soon as a striker comes running towards them.

  5. I would get it if there was no VAR and the ref called a pen on that. But he said no pen, saw the VAR and changed his mind? How? I dont get it.

  6. St Louis sporting director Lutz Pferrential who is from Germany got fired today sadly. Fun fact: Out of St Louis starting 11 lineup, 6 of those played in the German Bundesliga. Timo Baumgartl for Vfb Stuggart, Schalke 04 and Union Berlin, Edward Lowen for Fc Nurnberg, Hertha BSC, FC Augsburg and VFL Bochum, Tomas Ostrak for FC Koln (a sub and really a reserve player), Marcel Hartel for Fc Koln (another reserve and sub player), Joao Klauss for Tsg Hoffenheim (another reserve player) and most importantly of all, Roman Burki for Borussia Dortmund. St Louis is perhaps only MLS team to played with this many Germans and/or German descent players with ties to the Bundesliga as well as the fans and management being tied to Germany as well. Vancouver with Muller and the new much-needed defender from Germany Sebastian Schonlau perhaps shows some teams having a unique sense of play and style. St Louis deserved this win and its sad giving how the sporting director was fired. They should have went to hired a coach from the Bundesliga and Muller should have went to st Louis instead and connect with his German compatriots.
