USA vs Mexico: Who Should Start? | Plus Sergino Dest’s Debut for USA

In this episode, Andrew Wiebe, David Gass and Bobby Warshaw have a long conversation about Sergino Dest, emerging Ajax fullback, US U-20 star and US national team starter against Mexico. Only … we didn’t know that when we recorded! So the guys ponder whether Gregg Berhalter will start the 19-year-old dual national, who just got a call from the Dutch U-23s and what the push and pull says about the program. Plus, Bobby builds his ideal “play proactively” XI against El Tri.

Also in the episode … Nations League begins and Canada know they’ve got to be perfect! The guys heap praise on the underrated Maxi Moralez, NYCFC’s diminutive playmaker. Are LAFC vulnerable without Carlos Vela? Yeah, probably. Top expansion draft picks and most disappointing MLS team of the last decade.

3:40 – Sergino Dest … Should he start vs. Mexico (he will) and what’s his future with USMNT?

23:12 – How should the US play against Mexico?

32:38 – Goal.com’s Jon Arnold gives the Mexico perspective

39:36 – Why Concacaf Nations League matters and is very fun

43:37 – Why Canada has to be perfect to get into the Hex … and that’s fair

48:05 – Maxi Moralez is the most underrated attacker in MLS

52:48 – Are LAFC just a little bit vulnerable? What if Vela is out come playoffs?

55:10 – MAIL: Best expansion draft pick of all-time? Most disappointing team in the last decade?

  1. Orlando is the most disappointing team for me. Never made the playoffs even though they spend a good amount of money. They had a great fanbase that is showing up less and less and have less and less enthusiasm. They don't produce HG's. They have a great built-in rivalry with Atlanta but don't even challenge them. They can't get any real traction.

Bobby has the same reaction with Nations League as I do. I've tried a handful of times to understand the format but I zone out right away. Maybe I will get it better as the tourney progresses. CONCACAF drops the ball again…

LAFC is having the season of all MLS seasons but an argument can be made that Atlanta is 1B with them over the last dozen or so matches. Long enough where you can say this is their true form and not a blip. Atlanta can go toe-to-toe with LAFC this year. If anyone reads of comments each week, I'm not an Atlanta supporter even if it may seem that way lately.

  2. If you want to play a possession based game with this roster, this is your lineup:

    GK-Steffen
    RB-Dest
    CB-Robinson
    CB-Brooks
    LB-Ream
    DM: McKennie
    DM: Yueill
    RM: Boyd
AM: Lletget (not ideal but better than Pomykal imo)
LM: Pulisic (Could switch with Boyd)
    ST: Sargent

It's simply not possible to play possession based football against Mexico with guys like Long, Zimmerman, Cannon, Lima, Lovitz, Trapp, Morales, Morris, Baird, or Zardes on the field.

  3. Dude said let's face it the Netherlands is a better national team than USAbro nobody was debating that besides you and your own head! People have watched soccer occasionally knew that and your a columnist and radio host that talks about nothing but soccer wow!

  4. Tim ream the best ball playing centre back? good one bobby, I couldn't stop laughing. literally the worst centre back with his feet at Fulham. and no it wasn't hard to play passing football in championship, when slavisa jokanovic was managing Fulham, Fulham give license for centre backs to play. Fulham brought le Marchand as a left foot centre back cause Tim ream could only pass square, backwards or straight to the opponent. your knowledge of football outside MLS is laughable.

  5. 1. If the national team is becoming/has become another career decision no different than picking a club team than let's just put an end to international soccer. hikes up pants When I grew up it wasn't really like that. It was an honor to play for your country. Sure, you could get endorsements, move to a bigger club, and play on a big stage but it was generally an honor first.
    2. If the heart is strangled out of international soccer then it can go away. The level of play is worse since they don't get to practice as much. It injures players, wears out players and weakens club soccer. Tifo Football did a good piece explaining that players play too much and it is a detriment to the quality of play and is a legitimate quality of life issue. Hopefully, in the coming decades, they can put playing limits and thin out the outrageous workload that a lot of these teams/players have. Just last week I had a co-worker who doesn't watch much out of blue as me "is there too much soccer?". I laughed and said "yes". I never thought I would say that because I love the sport but it is getting ridiculous.

  6. U.S. Fans…Of which I was one…Get over it and expect continued mediocrity. This coach is not taking the team ANYWHERE and as long as players like Zardes are the best we can play up top, we have NO chance. Berhalter is not ready for this job and he can't see or find chemistry if it hits him in the face. I hate to sound "anti" this team. I am not but, I can see reality. No strong center back for a leader doesn't help.
