Don't be sleeping on D1 soccer! A lot of guys and girls who have been part of academy programs in Europe look to D1 colleges if they can't get a contract by 16. The football knowledge they bring is quite high. D1 just becomes a training ground for talent, plus they get another life skill that most footballers don't get for "life after football" if they choose to finish their program.
