TWO “Karate Kick” Fouls + Does Line of Sight Matter If GK Can’t Save It? | Instant Replay

Two dangerous high kicks headline this week’s Instant Replay—but were they red card offenses? 🤔

Host Andrew Wiebe breaks down a pair of “karate kick” challenges and whether they meet the threshold for serious foul play. Plus, a tricky attacking sequence raises a key question: does a goalkeeper’s line of sight matter if they were never getting to the ball anyway?

We dive into the Laws of the Game to explain what VAR looks for—and whether the correct decisions were made.

  1. Turgeman isn't obstructing the goalie's view – his own defender #4 does. In fact, Turgeman gets out of there faster than number 4. In fact, your explanation is insulting our intelligence – if you can draw a line, draw it directly from the kicker to the goalie and see that the defender is in the way.

  2. As a goalie and a neutral, first one forsure some major cope. Hes behind the defender at the moment of contact. I stopped watching these videos when i realized its just this bozo defending the league

  3. If some of you haven’t realized yet, this isn’t about coming to the correct decisions, it’s about making the referees bad decisions look good

  4. On first goal, I would argue that the shot was hit so it was rising and goalie had fair play on it, extending his arm but just misses it because of the unusual trajectory……But concur, rules are rules and if call was offsides interference then hard to say that is not a legit and defensible call. Second incident – my guess is Ref went yellow because of how quickly player pulls his leg in to minimize the contact and possible harm – again, not really relevant because taking the initial high kick without being aware of nearby players and making contact is the standard for dismissal – not trying to minimize damage after the foul has occurred.

  5. I'm wondering if the lack of force/follow-through from Anthony Markanich (not "Nick," Wiebe, that's his brother in Houston) was what prevented it being a red? There's clear studs contact, but I don't know that it's that forceful, given how his leg folds and doesn't seem to me to properly catch the chest with serious force. I think he relaxes his leg so as to avoid exactly that, and while you are free to disagree, it may have been enough for VAR to deem it not clear and obvious.

  6. The flying kick in the Minnesota- Dallas game really ought to have been a red card- I am pretty sure that the Minnesota player saw his defender and going with a boot that high for a low chance of winning a contested ball is not safe.
