George Best, another legend.
I remember having a Football Legends book and loving the section they had on Beckenbauer. He was just a man who oozed class, both on and off the pitch and is one of the most complete players we will ever see. Captain of a fantastic West Germany side that beat Cruyff’s Holland and Pele’s Brazil. Arguably top 3 defender ever alongside Maldini and Ramos but definite top 5. One of the best defenders around but could carry the ball into the midfield and skip past the best in the world like they were not even there and then go on to either help build up the attack or just hit a thunderbolt into the corner from 45 yards out, which he did famously in the WC semi-final after getting the ball and going on a run into the opposition’s half and not really seeing anyone open and deciding to just have a go. This was, I believe, like 10/15 minutes in. Tells you the character of the man when in one of the most tense games of his career, he felt comfortable taking the ball in defence and just charging into midfield with zero respect for his world-class opposition and deciding to just have a pop because he couldn’t see anyone free and presumably didn’t want to pass it sideways or backwards.
He was so good they had to invent a new position as the sweeper because he was doing the attacking and the defending.

Beckenbauer is HANDS DOWN the greatest defender.
His ability on the ball was superior to most Attacking midfielders. Passing better than most Central midfielders. And defensively the cleanest and slickest defender I've ever seen.

Beckenbauer is one of the best defenders of all time, one of the top 3 german players of all time… and also a great manager. One of the only players you actually can say that they changed the game forever. Ruhe in Frieden, Kaiser!
