The Myth & Mystique of Estadio Azteca

More fortress than stadium, the advantages of Azteca – with its capacity of 100,000, its elevation of 7,200 feet and its intimidating crowds – are legion. The US have never won an official match there and Mexico are virtually unbeatable in their Mexico City home.

The US national team will once again travel into the belly of the beast on Sunday night, when they take on Mexico in a World Cup qualifier at the famed Estadio Azteca (8:30 pm ET | FS1, Univision, UDN).

The latest episode of “The Hex” explores just what makes Azteca so special for Mexico — and such a difficult place for the US.

  4. The Azteca is a living entity so just imagine it at full capacity, it has gone down due to updates used to be 120,000 then 100,000 now it's 80,000 but it's still freaking epic ❤❤

  5. When i was about 7 years old i had a tournament INSIDE estadio azteca and holy crap i felt like a pro football player the stadium is massive! Its an amazing feeling to play inside it.

  6. Im an american so i never truly appreciated the aztec stadium wow this mfr is the biggest stadium ive ever seen i wouldnt be surprised if its the biggest stadium in the Americas considering that Mexico city is the oldest and largest city in the Americas

  7. When people hear this fact they are surprised and confused or pissed off that this stadium is in in a nation full of mudd colored people hahahahahaha! So here it is. El Coloso De Santa Ursula is bigger than Wembley. So you bet your ass there aint anything bigger here in the U.S.A…

  8. I popped my live football match cherry at the Azteca. Way back in 2005. America vs Guadalajara Super Clásico league match. 3-3. I was 15 years old. I didn’t have modern technology in my pocket at the time to record the experience, but I can still smell it, and recollect the unique colors, and hear the roars of the stadium. I’ll never forget that experience.. I recommend y’all put it in your bucket list if you’re a true football fan.

  9. My high school biology teacher played on the Canadian National Team in the 70s. He said coming out of the tunnel at Azteca was the most nervous he had ever been in his life.

  10. Playing at Aztec stadium AT 12PM with the sun and fans is hell… only costa rica have manage to beat us under those conditions… and honduras but it was a rainy night. The games at Azteca should of kept beign at noon, dumb decision to switch them at night.

  11. Brooo! I’ve been there 3 times in my life! It was INSANE! Like we say in Mexico City “Un desmadre bien organizado” I loved it. If you think the Michigan stadium is big and crazy, you haven’t experienced chaos in a good way… Haha

  12. Azteca stadium witnessed what is concider the 2 best world cups in the history. 2 of the best world champions Brazil(70) and Argentina(86) with 2 of the best soccer players in the history, PELE & MARADONA

  13. If you think about it! You can only go about three stadiums in FUTBOL/SOCCER that REPRESENT the ultimate test: MARACANA- AZTECA and WEMBLEY!!! When it comes to international matches EVERY soccer player dream of playing at least ONE MATCH there!!! What do you think? Do you agree?

  14. I've lived in México City all my life but I didn't go to a game on the Azteca until I was 23 and it just…
Bloody Hell this is something else…
I remember when I sat at my place I just thought "So this why it's called The Colossus of Santa Úrsula…"
Because it's just massive, loud as you wouldn't believe, with the field looking beautiful, it just makes you feel insignificant but not in a bad way, it makes you feel like you're part of it, it's just breathtaking…

  15. The first thing that struck me the first time I assisted the Azteca from the exterior was the ROAR. Permanent roar of the stadium. Then when I first percieved the interior of the stadium, I had the same feeling than when you see the ocean. Just HUGE, bigger than you imagined.

  17. I wish the Mexican Federación can update the stadium to become more modern and the best stadium in Mexico 🙂
Even though I hate the fact that club America use it for home games I think azteca should just keep it for Mexico national team and Events

  18. I'm from Arizona, have supported 🇲🇽 since I can remember and it's great to see past 🇺🇸 players talk about the rivalry and the Azteca, though it's not what it used to be. This is our area and hope Concacaf can improve more. Miss the tough games against Costa Rica, Honduras, United States.

  19. I am mexican i really didn´t Azteca Stadium i prefere Olimpico 68 that is the place where México was really unbeatable, México team no longer play there due the number of seats, less than in the Azteca. But was made for the olimpics back in 1968 a year remember for the Olimpic Games but also occur a bad tragedy in our country, that year our goverment made a massacre of students in Tlatelolco. Yes the Azteca got his history but it is a horrible stadium, i think that place needs a change looks to old and depressive.
