The Central Defensive Midfielder has gradually become one of the Premier League’s most essential roles in the starting XI. From dictating build-up, shielding the defence, to breaking up attacks and linking defence to attack through smart distribution, it’s a position that does it all.

In this episode of Football 101, we explore what makes the role so vital and why it remains one of football’s most underrated positions.

  1. The audacity of the anglos lol.

First, define “modern football”. That’s the main problem. But this position (and specifically, the “deeplying mid” role) has been paramount in other leagues since like the 70s.

That said, great job covering different types of “cdm”. But let’s focus on the crux of the thesis: In modern football, the CDM is the most important position, and Rodri’s ballon d’or is testament to this.

Rodri is a deep-lying playmaker. Yes, I know he is very complete l and not a regista type, but when he won his ballon d’or, it was at the peak of his evolution as more physical Busquets.

Xabi was deep-lying playmaker. Zubimendi as well, though not as physical as Rodri. All 3 came from the Spanish league.

Makélélé is seen as a more of a destroyer and defensive anchor, but he was also a deep-lying playmaker. He came from Ligue 1 and the Spanish league before moving to the prem.

Scholes is another example, but then we go back to the first point. What exactly is this “modern football” and when does it start?

And I know that it’s a prem league official video. So you can’t focus on the Pirlos, Krooses or Busquets in those foreign places. Let alone for the Albertinis or Redondos.

Essentially, my issue with this is : Modern football is a vague term. The Prem isn’t the arbiter of what is modern football all of sudden because you got Pep to shepherd out of the dark ages like 7 years ago. Chill.

Literally almost all of the “greatest teams” of the last the decades have employed some genius in this role (ac Milan of late 80’s-early noughties, Sir Alex’s man united treble winning season and 2005-2008, Real Madrid 1997-2001 and 2011-2014 and 2016-2024, Barcelona 2008-2012. At the international level, the Spanish, Italian, French, and German national teams since 1998.

The position isn’t all of a sudden the most important because City and Arsenal can’t win without a Zubi or a Rodri.

  2. Well nobody ever overlooked the best DLP of all time Andrea Pirlo, but my favorite is the main reason of France winning WC 2018, Chelsea UCL 2021, and of course Leicester PL 2015, one man carried them all, Ngolo Kante, the best CDM of all time.

  3. Declan Rice has been an 8 under Arteta for 3 seasons and he's still getting defensive mid shouts. He's the only "world class" player that gets shoved into a box like this.

  4. The key reason Liverpool have been poor this season. They haven't had a proper CDM since prime Fabinho. Slot managed with a double pivot of Gravenberch – MacAllister last year, but there are huge gaps in midfield this season. It is absolutely vital to buy a top tier CDM since they've already missed out on the likes of Tchouameni, Caicedo, Lavia etc.
