THE BLUE HELL: Can a Stadium Change the Fortunes of a Club? (FPV Drone Tour)

Hop on board, and discover how the WIZ transformed into Sporting KC..

With the recent surge of expansion in Major League Soccer it can be tempting to focus solely on new teams and their new stadiums.

However, the evolution of the Kansas City ‘Wiz’ into Sporting KC may be just as compelling a story, as it shows how an MLS original, fighting for relevancy in its hometown, was able to revamp itself into one of the most successful clubs in the league.

Homecoming is a new series that looks at the unique story of soccer stadiums in North American and explores the design, inspiration, and origins behind the best and brightest stadiums in Major League Soccer.

  1. Getting new ownership was huge. The Hunts did fine helping to start the league but they’re terrible team owners. They’re a football billionaire family that invests in soccer.

  2. Plenty of space to expand that stadium capacity. 18,000 is too small an increase to around 25,000 ( Not too big) would be ideal same as FC. Cincinnati for now.

  3. WOOoooo…!!! We. Are. SPORTING!!! No longer a resident of Jackson County, I've had blue blood running through my veins for 9 years now (pre-KC residency). LOVED standing in The Calderon during the 2020 Season Opener pre-Covid vs Houston. That 4-Nil beating felt majestic…right down to me LIVE recording Alan Palido's first SKC goal from The Blue Hell (Instagram: ryan_schoof).

Now living over 800+ miles away here in Michigan, there's only one thing to say:

    I-M-S-K-C!!! 🔷💙🔷

    For Glory. For City.
    One Sporting Way.
    No……Other……CLUB! 💙

  4. That is cool. A Soccer Specific Stadium, beloved by the club, fans, and supporters alike. Way to go, KC!

(Almost as if this is something that was required of new clubs entering MLS… Except for NYCFC, Atlanta, and Charlotte? I suppose Miami gets a pass, since they took the Strikers' old pitch, but… ehh…)

  5. I don't agree with this "my own stadium" thing, Seattle Sounders and Atlanta United They play in NFL stadiums and that doesn't make them less than others, it makes them bigger, because they average 40K attendance, I like the SKC stadium, but it's small, I still think they should play half the big games at arrowhead stadium.

Some teams that should do the same:
Minnesota United – Us Bank Stadium
    LAFC/Galaxy – Sofi Stadium
Orlando City – Camping World Stadium

Some 3-5 big games at these stadiums would be ideal, "El trafico" not being made at Sofi Stadium is a waste

  6. Please add to the cauldron a second deck so that 4000 fans can intimidate the others teams goalkeeper! That would be awesome! Invest in arguably one of the best supporters groups in MLS history!
