  1. "What would the press have said if I'd put one of them on the bench?!"

That in a nutshell is why he wasn't the right manager for that generation of England players. Absolute gentleman whom achieved brilliant successes in his career, just wasn't suited to international football IMO.

  2. Scholes played in centre midfield at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups and Euro 2000. He hardly set those tournaments alight. Furthermore Zidane played on the left for France. Easy to blame Johnny Foreigner manager Sven.

  3. I think he is right tho it’s the only formation they could have fit into. If he played a five man midfield are 4-3-3 then you open to
Other problems. They lacked CDMs and lone strikers. Owen couldn’t play as a lone striker and the strikers we did have were not good enough. There was no Drogba, Eto are Henry and Rooney in my eyes was a number 10 not a lone striker.

  4. What he could have done is maybe change the formation? 4-4-2 was limited even back then.

    GK – James
    RB – Neville
    CB – Campbell
CB – Rio – With the freedom to step out as a makeshift DM and Ball Playing CB
    CB – Terry
    LB – Cole

    CM – Scholes
    Box to Box – Gerrard
    AM – Lampard

    RM – Beckham
    LM – J Cole
    ST – Rooney / Owen

Unless the FA was in his ear telling him who he needed to play. There was no reason to stick with such an obviously outdated system.

  5. The fact that most professional midfielders say scholes was the best says a lot. Fans are very biased, xavi, iniesta, pirlo, zidane eta have no reason to be, all considered some of the best ever and they all say scholes

  6. I don't care for the scholes v gerrard v lampard debate, they are all great in their own ways, but surely the only logical decision was to put gerrard on the left? he's the only one with pace, and he had blistering pace. you can't play on the wing without atleast some pace, and the others had no pace. I would have played Gerrard there, Liverpool fans will tell you Gerrard is the most rounded out of the lot (to be fair, he was), and would have done a better job.

Am I alone in my thinking of this? Lampard and Scholes would be totally useless on the left, but Gerrard would have been better.

This is exactly why Argentina stuggle; Their unwillingness to play Aguero at striker and moving Messi into the midfield (Messi is their best passer).

  7. i would play formation like this if i was sven at euro 2004:

    1-James GK

    2-Beckham Right WB
    3-Terry Right CB
    4-Campbell Left CB
    5-A.Cole Left WB

    6-Gerrard Defensive deep lying playmaker
    7-Lampard Box-to-Box
    8-Scholes Shadow striker

    9-Owen Central Sriker
    10-Rooney Raumdeuter Right
11- J. Cole Advance playmaker Left

  8. I'm angry that this management (I say management because the likes of McClaren were assisting him and therefore, giving him a lot of input) decided to play Scholes out on the left in order to accommodate Gerrard and Lampard in the middle but I am furious that Sven still won't admit he got it wrong. Paul Scholes was what Andrea Pirlo was for Italy and what Xavi was for Spain..and currently how Verratti has been playing for Italy

  9. Not an easy fit here. Mmmmm . . . 4-1-2-1-1? Becks CDM, Gerrard RCM, Scholes LCM Lampard CAM, Owens CF and Rooney S? Becks has the best pinpoint long balls and plenty of work rate. Gerrard had a great energy from the centre right side cutting in when he wanted, Scholes had the same from the centre left side, Lampard can advance and score but temporarily he can drop and interchange positions with either Gerrard attacking from the right or with Scholes attacking from the left. Owens had great speed to swing either side of Rooney as a supporting forward/substitute wing attack and Rooney as the striker has muscle and skill to push the high line or lay up for any central midfielders. It does mean that the back four defence has their work cut out for them but I see Becks could make a fine central defensive sweeper in front of the back four and a good place for a captain. Either Scholes or Gerrard (not both!) drop a bit to assist while still able to go box to box depending on opposition's midfield formation. Gerrard and Scholes can also defensively push from the centre to the sideline to limit the oppositions wingers space and passing lanes from the RCM or LCM positions. If they dominate the centre midfield then they control the game more and start attacks from the centre. Limit the opposition to the wings and reduce any attacking switches. Well that is how I would play them. Convincing the players is another story but a manager must have a plan and selling it as the solution for those players as the best way for them playing for England not their clubs and be willing to change their positions for the country.

  10. Remember those ridiculous friendlies when he would change the entire team at half time? Then when we got to the tournaments he was still none the wiser as to what to do! His failures set England back at least 10 years. Shame on the bumbling suits who sacked the brilliant Venables and the visionary Hoddle for this guy, the Scandanavian Pulis.

  11. Playing a flat 4 midfield like that without a DM really guaranteed an undynamic team for quite a while. England where much better with Paul Ince before, and Gareth Barry later.

  12. In 2002 they missed Bowyer who was the best defensive midfielder at the time and was not selected for non-footballing reasons. Scholes who could never tackle missed a tackle and Ronaldinhio scored.
