Soccer & LGBTQ Pride: From Stonewall to Wonderwall

At the moment, Collin Martin is the only active, openly gay professional athlete in the 5 major sports leagues. Yet he is not alone.

Robbie Rogers, Michael Sam, Jason Collins, and Scott Frantz are other pro athletes that have come out during or after their careers in sports. Moreover, there are countless sports fans and supporters of LGBTQ Pride that make their voices heard across the country on Pride Nights and events.

However, with support in the stands, why are there not more open gay athletes on the field? Former MLS player Calen Carr visits Minnesota to discuss this topic and more with the likes of Collin Martin, Ike Opara, and others in the Twin Cities.

Along the way he explores the often overlooked history of LGTBQ community, the strides that have been made since events like the Stonewall Riots of 1969, and the work still left to be done.

  1. I grew up playing soccer and remembered the first MLS game in 1996 now in 2022 the mls has changed tremendously. 1 Corinthians 6vs9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who practice homosexuality or thieves nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. God is not mocked his word is truth and the rainbow was a sign of God that he was not going to flood the earth again

  2. I love that this is sharing such a good message of an open playing field, with no judgments, no homophobic fears…. this should be how we act as fans, as players…. decent. Bless it, it's nice to see people be able to be themselves. That's not much to ask.

  3. The dislikes proves that this country still has a big hatred for gay people. What's wrong with gay people? And wanting to be apart of soccer?
Don't like it? Well they probably don't like it when you push your sexuality on them.

  4. MLS Is genius now all the gay dudes are gonna go buy tickets and watch their games filling up more seats which means more money lmao

  5. There are likely several gay people in the MLS, yet we don't hear them make a big deal about it just like a straight person doesn't make a big deal about being straight. It doesn't matter. No one cares if you're gay and that's a great thing!! It's almost 2020. Why do we need all this recreational outrage and faux injustices to rally around? Things are actually pretty amazing right now for everyone. Why can't we just celebrate that?

  7. I support the lgbtq but I honestly think this is stupid, soccer is a sport not a political convention center. U shouldn’t put politics in a sport. Many people watch soccer bc they love the sport and if ur putting things that they really don’t want to see then thats when people start to see things in another way like hate.
