as mexican I remember this game all too well. One of the most brutal games Ive ever seen and the dirtiest tackles on a world cup in knockout stage. This and the Ned-Spa final in '10.
06 world cup was probably peak soccer in our lifetimes. too much talent at their best of their careers. Ronaldo, Messi, FIgo, Ronaldinho, Van Persie, Robben, etc etc etc…. just read the squads called for the WC. damn. Historic squads for most countries.

Costinha's challenge was clear intent to injure, as was the kick to Ronaldo's leg a bit earlier. Shouldve been 2 straight red cards within 30 minutes, but the referee was afraid to show red and the match devolved as a result.

Every time they know they can't win against a better team, Netherlands starts playing dirty. WC2022 vs Argentina, they fouled 30 times against Argentina's 18. WC2010 against Spain it was 28-19. Can't find a fouls statistics for this game, but I'm pretty sure everyone has seen how it started, with Netherlands intention to get Ronaldo off the field. What they didn't expect was Portugal's answer to be so rough. You'd think they'd learn this tactic doesn't work since they've lost every game they practiced this dirty tactic, but it looks like they didn't.

If the referree had protected ronaldo and gave his opponent a red card from the start nothing would have happened. After his substitution the portugues took revenge and it went out of control. I'm Not a ronaldo fan by far but this was a clear red.

People saying "imagine this game with VAR, how many more cards we would have" is wrong, to be honest. With VAR there's no way Boulahrouz would escape the red card by that tackle on Ronaldo right before the 7th minute, and it would be a different game, altogether.
