Sent Off After 3 Mins! Fastest EVER Red Card to Start an MLS Season

New York City FC center back Maxime Chanot entered the record book for the wrong reasons on Sunday against Columbus Crew SC in NYCFC’s MLS opener.

The 30-year-old was shown a red card in the third minute, after taking down Lucas Zelarayan — who was ahead of Chanot and about to be 1v1 with goalkeeper Sean Johnson (watch video above). The red card is the fastest one ever shown to start an MLS season. It equals the third fastest red card to start an MLS game.

  1. 30+ yards out, not even in control of the ball which is going diagonally not straight, 2 defenders not even 10 yards away. Not an obvious goal scoring opportunity in any way. What was obvious was the studs up leg breaking tackle on Tinnerholm and the hands to Maxi's face but the ref made his bias pretty clear.

  2. This NYCFC foul is a definite foul but I would only be concerned about the offside position of the player in question. If he is not in a position to legally receive the ball, the foul can still be given but it toes a line of DOGSO if the goal would’ve been called back for an infringement. Edit: from the look of it, his run was timed well so I’d say a harsh but correct red.

  3. haha its an obvious red card for dogso and he knew what he was doing by going behind the player to clip his heels, why else would he have gone around the player from behind? anyone who says otherwise or it was an accident doesnt watch or play the game

  4. Ramy Touchan 👎🏻 should never be allowed to referee again! Patrons do NOT pay 💸 to see you! First game of the season and you’ve already ruined the game for the players, fans and the franchise. You give MLS a bad name! And there should NOT 🚫 be female referees allowed to referee in professional male Soccer ⚽️ matches and vice versa.

  5. Hilarious how many comments say "not a red". If it's a foul, which it is, it's a red here, because of the goalscoring opportunity. I don't actually like the DOGSO law, but it's the law and it has to be applied, and it would be applied this way anywhere in the world.

  6. Eh it wasnt as egregious as a red should be. Thats a yellow tbh. Now if he full on tripped or pushed him then a red. These refs suck because in our first game the Goal Keeper that hit Barcos ball with his hands outside the box should've been a red.

  7. This type of foul is as professional as they come. They walk across the back heels of the player knowing full well the slightest bit of contact will trip up his opponent. Then they all play dumb like it was an acccident. Definitely an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Good decision by the referee.
