There’s actually a really interesting reason why communism didn’t take much hold in the United States during the 20s-30s when it was on the rise in Europe. That’s because already at that point, communism was not seen as an “American” idea or: not originating from an American or coming from an American mindset. Combine this with the immigration laws of the time (mainly on Eastern Europeans) and that does not leave much room for another ideology much the less a “foreign” one, much room. Which is why the plenty of grassroots movements while still largely unsuccessful during the 20s, still had more local impact and effect than the communist movement during that era, mainly because those grassroots movements appealed to local and “American” mindsets.
