  1. Maybe it's time that MLS consider bringing in UEFA or CONMENBOL officials to handle the most important derby/rivalry games in MLS. In addition, MLS and PRO officials should be doing a better job of evaluating their referees each game, immediately demoting those with the most egregious and promoting those who show better decision making. As a former referee, I know it can be difficult at times, even at the more junior levels (youth, high school, collegiate, etc), but games and seasons are based on the actions of the guy in the center.

My old mentor when I first started in the early 1980's as a referee (a retired 2nd and 1st division official from England) always told me after each evaluation that smart decisions allow the fan to go home without ever knowing a referee was on the field. That does not mean I never made a decision, it meant I needed to understand the game, watch the ebb and flow, manage where needed, and be available at all other times. Yes, there will be a game or two that there is nothing I could do right (basically, the teams were out to kill each other) but I find it interesting the same referees in MLS continually seem to interject themselves into the game.

The top MLS rivalry game (49 years and counting) deserves only the best officiating. The question is…when will MLS and PRO come to that same realization?

  2. Never ever seen a ref completely out of his depth in a Seattle v Portland game….nope that's never happened before. cough cough red card wedding cough cough.

  3. ok morris needs to start learning how to finish… seriously every time he is left alone with the goalkeeper, no defenders around (and it happens often) he misses it. He literally has to kick it anywhere but at the goalie and every single time it gets saved. Like with how often this happens, any other team/player could have a couple goals in a game 😒😭

  4. I hope they review this game, fine the ref and let him know his behavior was absolutely ridiculous, and he should be fired afterwards. He was absolutely out of his mind terrible and changed the outcome of this game, undeniably.

  5. I was at this game. Both teams could have done better in the final third. Morris really should have scored several times and other players should have played the ball into the box more quickly. The Sounders had more possession and more chances but Portland did well on the counter attack several times. The Portland goalie and defense also made some solid saves and blocks.

The ref was calling fouls and yellow carding on the Sounders with little contact on Timbers players who yelled "Timber" and fell at the slightest contact including on the play resulting in the red card. I know the second yellow card was more for dissent but the original foul call was very soft. Strangely, the ref called no foul on a Sounders tackle a few times in the second half when a lesser offense was called a foul in the first half.

Meanwhile Portland Committed 4 or 5 obvious yellow card fouls in the first half without anyone receiving a yellow card. There is a difference between playing physical and hacking or playing the man instead of the ball. Worst of all, the ref failed to play advantage 3 or 4 times for the Sounders. The first time, okay the ref made a mistake with a quick whistle. On the 2nd 3rd, and 4th failures you wonder what the ref is thinking and why he cannot properly see the situation. I am honestly not sure what happened with the mass confrontation after the ball went out of bounds because I was watching the ball crowd surf 15 rows back.

  6. Is that 5 years and counting that Seattle haven’t won at derby game at home. If I were a sounders fan I’d be embarrassed. Your players lack passion for your club. Also you still haven’t won a cascadia cup at home, what does that feel like? 🪓 > 🐟

  7. Was at the game, ref’s were not handing out yellows much to PTFC .Rothrock was not playing good the first half and was all over the place second half

  8. It’s a semi contact sport. Please MLS retrain your refs to understand that it’s NOT a NON CONTACT sport. Players are allowed to bump and shoulder check. Pushes are just fouls unless they are strategic. FFS all I watched were the highlights and it irritated me
