  1. That i agree with, i think there's a little bit of truth in what we both said like you say it depends on the exact situation a defender might find himself in when one on one etc, auf wiedersehen !

  2. No but if you get too close too early and he gets past you your team is fucked, you buy time to allow your team mates to get behind the ball and help support the defence of your goal…

  3. not giving him any space means not even letting him get into posession of the ball, the key is to always be one step ahead of you opponent. so intercepting passes, standing close to him so he cant make his moves is very important. i did not say the defendr sucks, nor did i say that i dont support football in the us.

  4. Standing off is ok, it's not when they get within a few feet of the box & it depends on the angle they're at also. You get close & he goes past you then your now redundant and you've left your team in a shit position. You only close down when it warrants it.

  5. i am not generalising anything i am just saying that giving a forward some space is the worst possible way of defending him and every defender knows that you have to stay close to the player in order to defend him properly. step on his toes every time he is in posession of the ball! i play the game for over 15 years now, i know a thing or two about defending! and when someone who has the true honor to defend cristiano he should be able to know what he is doing! joga bonito!

  6. Stop generalising and being xenophobic, true fans of the beautiful game should be supporting the sport growing in the US and it undoubtedly is growing there as reflected in the better results they now get and long may it continue !

  7. yeah because giving a foward some space helps defending him…especially when its c. ronaldo! good advice from an MLS veteran, guess the americans do know how to play ball…..NOT!!!!

  8. it's better to stay between the goal and the opposition. closing down allows him to dribble past you and after that there's nothing you can do.

  9. ''definitely give him space'' what the fuck ???? You can't give Ronaldo space, he will eat you alive !!!! You have to give him very little space and pressure him all the time. If Ronaldo feels he's being pressured he won't play as good… Boateng did that against Ronaldo and it worked… Dani Alves does that sometimes and it works (sometimes) but if you give him space he will rip you into pieces dude… look at Van der Wiel from Netherlands against Portugal in the Euros. He looked like a clown !

  10. Lol didnt Cristiano net 3 againts LA, the eventual MLS Cup champs last year? How many will he have against the mid-table Galaxy this year? 5? 6? Lulz at this guy.
