Referee KEEPS his on-field decision + DOGSO in Vancouver? | Instant Replay

Inter Miami wanted a late penalty in their match over the weekend, only for the referee to stick with his call on the field! Was he right to keep his decision? Plus, the Vancouver Whitecaps thought they had a penalty in their match over the weekend, and the Philadelphia Union won the Supporters Shield! But NYCFC was so close to a late goal to keep the shield alive. Andrew Wiebe reviews it all from Matchday 38 in this week’s Instant Replay!

  1. But you're not "allowed your space" when you move into a player's path and take down the guy, not playing the ball – helps make it really clear – and you imped them. (Nearly perpendicular run) Attacker touched it around/by him and got blocked from the ball. Foul (And it's direct. And it's in the box so… )

  2. Body check shoulder to shoulder is not a foul but this check is from behind with a foot across the body. Foul! 1:50
Clumsy defending. No contact with ball and taking out a player that has ball control. Foul! 2:51
Pull on shirt of a Whitecaps player should've been a foul. U can see from far camera angle that the shirt is pulled. Foul!
That's pretty bad VAR reviews in my eyes and sorry but I don't agree with you on these.

  3. I disagree with the second call because a fair charge from the side is shoulder to shoulder, and the defender not only hits the offense player's ribs but also extends the forearm as a weapon, not a tool.

  4. 1:07 Miami v NE, it can't be a penalty because the contact happened outside the box and, crucially, did not continue into the penalty area. In normal circumstances, VAR would not have got involved at all because potential fouls outside the box cannot be given. The exception is if it's a possible red card offence (denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, for example) and that's why they asked the ref to look at it but he was happy that wasn't the case. But please stop saying it might have been a penalty!

  5. The Coov vs SJ. Andrew, it WAS a foul, you can't technically see the jersey pull, but you can see the result of a jersey pull. Why else would he fall backwards? It's a no-brainer regardless of the camera angle. This isn't a court of law, 100% proof isn't necessary on a play like that, and I'm not a "homer" for either team.

  6. Really? Nothing on the most interesting use of VAR this week, the DC goalie handling call?

I know it was pretty clear cut, but so were some of the calls in this video, and it might be the first time MLS has used VAR to call that particular type of foul. Maybe Wiebe doesn't want to kick DC when they're down? (And wouldn't that preclude kicking them ever these days?)

  7. Carole Anne Chénard is so often right that even though her recommended PK was against my NERevs, I too am wondering what she saw but Apple didn't show us.

  8. Vancouver-SJ: that's totally a penalty. I don't care much for either team, but there is no way for a person to reverse their trajectory while in mid-air. There's no other explanation for that movement, and we're grasping at straws to say that it's not conclusive.

  9. Very surprised the first red card in the CLT DC game was not on here. It was genuinely controversial and could've only been a yellow so odd to see the second one that was clear and not the first.

  10. In the stadium I didn’t catch the Priso one. That looks like a pull down to me. Should’ve been a call but I mind a lot less when you win 4-1 anyway.

  11. Zaha getting special treatment. Obviously I head back to the chest should be a red butt zaha is allowed to do whatever the crap he wants to anyone else so I'm still not a fan of this. He's the garbage player and brings down the whole league. He brings shame on himself and his family.

  12. Rusnak red was a good call. I say this as a Sounders guy. Remember seeing that one on the broadcast and my first reaction was "That's going to get looked at for a red."

  13. That wasn’t even in the box what is anyone talking about, if it was a foul it would have been a free kick, you’d have to argue dogso and a red to even do anything

  14. I might be alone, but I'm not a fan of these Offside calls, just because an offensive player is quicker than the defensive player they shouldn't be penalized especially when the defensive player intentionally slows down knowing he'll get the offside call.
