Proposed MLS Detroit Stadium Design

Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and Cleveland Cavs owner Dan Gilbert announced on Tuesday that they are partnering to form an investor group to bring an MLS expansion club to downtown Detroit.

An MLS expansion team has not been awarded to Detroit yet, but the ownership group offered a potential stadium design.

Commissioner Don Garber has announced the league will expand to 28 teams.

  1. I think Ilitch Holdings, who owns MLB’s Detroit Tigers and the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings, Shelia Ford Hamp, who owns the NFL’s Detroit Lions, and Tom Gores, who owns the NBA’s Detroit Pistons, will hopefully award an MLS franchise to Detroit in the near future.

  2. Instead of building an expensive new stadium in Detroit at taxpayer expense, my idea is to rotate the "Michigan FC MLS" regular season games between the U-M, MSU, EMU, CMU, WMU football stadiums. All 5 of these stadiums are 30,000 plus capacity, with the 3 MAC schools already being ideally sized for average MLS attendance. With most of the MLS season coming before college football season anyways, this would likely maximize statewide attendance as well as getting folks onto college campuses when students are gone for the summer. Great way to generate revenue for these 5 schools as well.

  3. With all the expansion talk, remember that money won't be that big of a concern as it was in the past.
A lot of big-time figures are behind starting up these new teams, and it's not just the MLS. Remember the NY Cosmos? They play in the new NASL now, and they're sponsored by Fly Emirates. The more big companies we can bring into the MLS, the better chance we have at expanding to 28+ teams and competing with the other big American sports leagues

  4. Looked up the Sacramento republic FC project and it looks really good gorgeous stadium and good looking jerseys especially there third kit is awsome Cali is a big enough state to have 4 teams north and south rivalry sounds good to me

  5. weren't they bankrupt a few years ago??? the only right way to do this is if the whole project is privately funded. You should not add taxes to a struggling city

  6. Where is Detroit going to come up with a BILLION DOLLARS to pay for this?
If Detroit is going to do this, they should demolish the worst neighborhood in the city and ONLY under the condition that it includes police protection 24/7/365. All this is doing is lining the pockets of $Billionaires.

  7. I have great expectations for MLS development and it's really exciting to see how football is growing in the US. I'm not American, but I wish this league all the best.

  8. So many doubters here. Detroit is one of the best if not the best sports town in the country. Many die hard fans like myself would LOVE to see an MLS team here in Detroit, and many have been wishing for it for many years. Detroit isn't much different then any other major city, a beautiful downtown, surrounded by ghettos.
    LET'S GO DETROIT!

  9. Rather than just expanding, which is good, we should just make the NASL our second division, like the Championship in England. Promotion and relegation would truly give this league the jump it needs to becoming relevant with the world of soccer/football.
