Outrage Grows as Soccer Coach Is Cleared of 12-Year-Old Boy’s Murder

There was a display of raw emotion Wednesday as the murder trial involving an upstate New York soccer coach came to an end. Oral “Nick” Hillary, a Clarkson University soccer coach, was acquitted in the death of 12-year-old Garrett Phillips, who was found strangled in 2011. Tandy Cyrus Collins, the boy’s mother, sobbed when the not guilty verdict came down. She had to be comforted by relatives. A spectator who disagreed with the jury’s findings yelled out in court: “Karma’s gonna get you!” #InsideEdition

  1. I recently started learning about this case. It seems that many people have naively fallen for the documentary's highly skewed presentation. Nick Hillary was the obvious primary suspect and not targeted based on race. And there was significant evidence implicating him. He had the strongest motive after a recent breakup which he may have blamed on Garrett. He was on video in the parking lot for no reason and then following Garrett home out of the parking lot just before the crime. He had an unexplained injury to his ankle consistent with a jump from the window. According to the city attorney, one analysis indicated that there was only a 1 in 30 million chance that the DNA under Garrett's fingernails was not Nick Hillary's. Nick was caught in a number of inaccurate statements. He showed no concern when told of Garrett's death and no interest in how he died. That's a significant tell. The other main suspect, John Jones, had a video alibi showing him entering his home and then walking his dog near his home at the time of the murder. You can draw whatever conclusion you like from all this evidence.

  2. Commenting after watching this case on Dateline. I think it's unfortunate law enforcement targeted Nick, without weighing it really could've been a stranger/intruder who killed Garrett. Note the fingerprints left at the window that didn't match any of the individuals questioned. Just hope they entered those prints in CODIS, so if the killer commits another crime he will be tracked back to this one. I do think it was a stranger…someone who lived in close proximity to the apt bldg they lived in. I also wondered if anything in the apt had been tampered with or was missing. Bc i believe someone entered with the intent to steal but wasn't expecting anyone to be there. In the end, it's hard to believe race did not play a factor in both the mom and police targeting Nick.

  3. During his first interrogation he flushed his cigarette butts down the toilet so they couldn’t get DNA, but they get hit dna and it didn’t match, but why did he flush those cigarettes??? Was it because he thought he did leave his DNA behind ???

  4. I could tell just by watching his interview he did not do it. When he answered he didn’t fumble with answers or give extra information than needed. He wasn’t swallowing hard before or after his answers. He wasn’t looking away to think about the answer before giving it. In my opinion the jones guy is a little suspicious. He called to ask who was dispatched to the scene? But he was spotted there 15 minutes before it happened? He was in law enforcement? They couldn’t find any DNA or fingerprints? He either knew how to cover his tracks OR just had the upper hand maybe by being able to destroy evidence.

  5. So sad. Blame the poor black man🤦🏽‍♀️🙄
They was so busy being racist that they let that get in the way of who really did kill that poor boy and that person has now got away with murder. Sad all around. Ruined this mans life for NOTHING.
FINGER PRINTS DIDN’T MATCH. You cant just ignore that and still claim he done it just because you want him to be the killer🤦🏽‍♀️

  6. Someone was robbing that home when Garrett got home the evidence just didn’t point to him all the fingerprints were jot his he had two alibis but its the black dude right

  7. I know some think he may have hired a hitman to kill the boy but that is very unlikely as not only would it have cost him a lot of money but more often than not the men sent to act as hitman turn out to be undercover police pretending to go along with it. Judge was right not to convict him. There was no physical evidence. An alleged motive and suspicious behaviour is not enough to convict beyond reasonable doubt.

  8. Why wasn’t the sex offender registry for the area the first list of people they checked?? He was murdered after someone would have had time to watch the family and know he was left home alone often.

  9. The withheld statement by the DA (Mary Rain) from Greg Brown, was a huge blow to the prosecution. Someone actually seeing John Jones entering the apartment, 15 minutes before the murder, is more evidence than the prosecution had on Nick Hillary. Not to mention, a letter to the police department from Garrett’s mother, stating that she felt she and her kids were in danger and feared for their lives from John Jones. Doesn’t seem like the Detectives wanted to investigate one of their own.

What the DA didn’t know is that she was under investigation during the trial and had her license suspended for Disregard for Defendants rights and Professional Misconduct.

  10. Nothing like the railroading of a black man by police because he was dating the sheriffs ex girlfriend. Sad. These cops should be ashamed of themselves. Terrible job protecting and serving. Should all be fired.

  11. Only a moron or racist can actually believe he did this. If he did there would be some type of evidence in that apartment or on the body. Those cops and DA should be locked up. Dirty scumbags

  12. He should look up Casey Anthony they would make a good couple. Too bad Casey wasn't black, she could have pulled the race card and not falsely accused her father of sexually assaulting her.
