France needed more bodies in midfield so they could get a hold of the ball and supply the forwards. The squad quality was there but the tactics weren't.
Don't think its a matter of not showing up. I just dont think the French/Deschamps really had a plan for how to tactically deal with the Spanish possession and their strength in the midfield. The Spanish had a plan, they knew how to suffocate every opening for Mbappe and executed it well. France, however, had no idea what to do to open or create any space. So to me it wasn't so much that the players didn't show up, but more so they weren't tactically prepared for the ifs and buts of this game. DD I think just relied on his immense talent pool to carry the game.
