Head coach Brian Smith of the Ohio Bobcats arrives at Ohio Stadium prior to the game again against the Ohio State Buckeyes on September 13, 2025 in Columbus, Ohio.

Ohio University fired head football coach Brian Smith for what it called "serious professional misconduct."
Smith was accused of violating university policy by storing and consuming alcohol in his office with assistant coaches.
Smith's attorney disputes the grounds for termination and plans to fight the university's decision.

Former Ohio University football coach Brian Smith was reprimanded for violating the school's alcohol policy shortly before his Dec. 17 firing, according to a copy of his personnel file obtained by The Dispatch.

Smith was placed on leave Dec. 1 and has vowed to fight his termination after just one season leading the Bobcats. It's unclear whether the accusations, reported earlier by The Athletic, were the cause of Smith's firing.

There have been new developments in the firing of Ohio University coach Brian Smith. Read the latest here.

Officially, the school accused the former coach of "engaging in serious professional misconduct and participating in activities that reflect unfavorably on the university."

Here's what we know so far about Smith's firing.
What was OU coach Brian Smith fired for?

A letter in Smith's personnel file dated Nov. 24 stated that Smith met with athletic director Slade Larscheid and other administrators Nov. 24 to discuss allegations related to drug and alcohol usage that violated university policy.

Smith told Larscheid and OU director of employee experience Suzanne Durst that he stored alcohol in his office desk drawer and he occasionally would be joined by assistant coaches for a single drink of bourbon in his office after games, according to the letter. All of the assistants were over the age of 21 and Smith told administrators that the alcohol never impacted his job performance.

University policy prohibits the use of alcohol in the workplace or in a university car, and a Nov. 25 letter issued a formal reprimand to Smith for violating the protocol. The second letter warned Smith that he could face further disciplinary action.

A Dec. 1 letter was also in Smith's personnel file placing the coach on paid leave. The coach was ordered to return all property belonging to the university including office and desk keys, ID badges and credit cards ad he was prohibited from stepping foot on campus except for official meetings requested by the school, the letter states.

The letter placing Smith on leave said he was under investigation for unspecified "allegations of inappropriate conduct and possible violations of university policy and your employment agreement."

"We vigorously dispute Ohio University's grounds for the termination for cause of Coach Brian Smith," Smith's attorney Rex Elliott said in a prepared statement. "He is shocked and dismayed by this turn of events, and we plan to fight this wrongful termination to protect his good name. Coach Smith is an ethical man who has done an exemplary job for the University. He wants nothing but the best for the players, coaches, and the entire Bobcat community."
What was Brian Smith's tenure like at Ohio University?

Smith served a short stint atop the OU football program.

The Bobcats were coming off their first Mid-American Conference title in decades when Smith was named head coach of the Bobcats Dec. 14.

He led Ohio to an 8-4 record in the 2025 season before he was placed on leave Dec. 1. Before becoming head coach, Smith had served as an offensive coordinator for the team since 2022.

Smith replaced Tim Albin, who left at the end of 2024 to take a head coaching job at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Ohio has named defensive coordinator John Hauser the interim coach, and he will continue in that role for the Bobcats' game against UNLV in the 2025 Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl.

  2. Word on the street is Lane Kiffin(Urban Meyer too ?) used to cruise campus bars until he ran across a university president's daughter, now he talks about not drinking anymore and doing yoga got the Ole Miss job now coeds on the LSU campus have been warned 😮

  3. In N. Idaho college a social studies instructor, a white man, was sleeping with the college basketball players, who were all black. He bribed them to help them improve their grades so they could play because they all were failing. If you fail, you couldn't play. It ruined the reputation of the college, and it ruined his marriage. I had him as in instructor.

  4. Mike Leach ( r.i.p.) was getting drunk on campus when I attended Texas Tech! Everyone knew, but he improved the program and it was overlooked. This stuff is happening nationwide

  5. These guys dumb as hell. Butttttt here the counterpoint. If you exclude college coeds from these smaller college towns. There is no pussy. Or at least worthwhile pussy. Soooo 😮😮😮. I mean this guy seems like a drinking problem. And adultery is sinful. But if the coach is a bachelor and would date a student consensually, not a university employee staff member , that’s fine. That’s life.
