  1. The last thing I’d say is this because I am on a role: how important is Jacob Murphy to Newcastle? Every time they do something positive, he’s right in the middle of it. Tempo, pressure, end product—he’s the common denominator.

So if I had to boil this match down to two takeaways, they’re pretty simple:

Murphy is Newcastle’s MVP, full stop.

Fulham’s keeper—and whoever is responsible for coaching his positioning—need serious reconsideration if the club is genuinely interested in keeping the ball out of their own net.

If, however, the goal is to provide opponents with confidence, chaos, and the occasional gift-wrapped chance… then by all means—salute and proceed, sir.

  2. The second goal is another horrendous read by Lecomte. I MEAN GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY WHAT ARE YOU DOING SON? He misplays this so badly that he can’t even get himself composed enough to leave the ground.

That’s twice now where Lecomte is completely unaware of his surroundings and wildly misjudges his distance to the ball. On the first goal, he fails to recognize there’s no threat at his back—he can simply let the ball run across and out of play. Instead, he panics.

On the second, he commits… de-commits… then commits again. By the time the ball arrives, his body is so out of sync that he can’t generate a two-inch vertical. That’s not bad luck—that’s poor decision-making layered on top of worse technique.

Maybe it’s just a terrible night, but this performance from Benjamin Lecomte is flirting with hot-garbage territory for a Premier League keeper.

I’d probably play the other guy if he’s available—unless the plan is to turn matchdays into a weekly dumpster fire.

  3. What is Lecomte doing on the first goal? This is a fundamental awareness failure. One thing that would dramatically help a lot of players—keepers especially—is a constant shoulder check. You have to know what’s happening behind you and on the opposite flank at all times. That awareness has to be coached and ingrained.

If Lecomte scans over his shoulder, he immediately recognizes there’s no danger on his backside. The correct decision is simple: let the ball travel across the face of goal and roll safely out of play.

Instead, he rushes off his line and throws out a hand, only to knock the ball straight back into the center of the pitch—the most dangerous area you can possibly gift it. That’s not bad luck. That’s poor awareness paired with an even worse feel for the moment.

You have to understand what’s happening around you before you go sticking a hand out. At this level, that’s non-negotiable.
