MISSED Penalty for Miami?! Last-Minute PK Wins It for D.C. United | Instant Replay

Was Miami denied a penalty?! 😳

A potential handball in the box sparks debate.

On this episode of Instant Replay, Andrew Wiebe breaks down a potential handball by Charlotte’s Harry Toffolo that wasn’t called on the field—and explains why it didn’t meet the “clear and obvious” threshold for review.

Plus, we dive into the late-game-winning penalty that gave D.C. United all three points.

Two massive moments. Big implications.

  1. my favorite Wiebe-ism: "not enough here in my opinion." Pull the jersey, it's a foul. Trip a player, it's a foul. Doesn't matter how MUCH contact there is. If there's contact or a jersey pull then letter of the law it's a foul.

  2. This is absolutely a penalty and it's not just this one, later on,this fucking referee and even fucking VAR team avoid another penalty for Miami in this match too..Absolutely the fucking MLS referees are not qualified and most of tgem always biased towards Miami's opponents to help them can beat inter Miami..

  3. Didn’t Miami get 0 penalties awarded for the entire 2025 MLS season?? Yeah, so Miami doesn’t get every "call" …haters. And Miami still had the most goals in 2025. MLS teams are cry babies, give them all a participation award so they quit throwing tantrums 😱

  4. I don't understand the logic of Gregersen looking for a foul when he is being pulled backwards yet still leans in for the header. Not to mention, he's close enough to where if he's not being pulled backwards by the jersey, he's wide open and likely puts a shot on goal and buries it. That's definitely a penalty. Defender makes absolutely no attempt to play the ball, only has a handful of Gregersen's jersey.

  5. Come on. Portius needs at LEAST a yellow for diving. Honestly it should be a red since it took a goal off. That’s a bullshit dive he’s gotta be suspended for it.

  6. To welcome guests, clean the house first. There is no discipline, the system is poor, and the referee must be recruited before the star recruitment, and the var system and camera composition must be changed. I'm confused whether I'm watching American football or soccer

  7. Andrew dropping the ball again. Not going to review the Austin goal against rsl?? That one would have been a fascinating one to review. Clearly the player is in an offside position and impacting or impeding the vision of the goalie. I'm extremely shocked that one was not called back

  8. You can pause it at 4:53 he misses the ball and its a trip on the back leg.

4:57 he has the arm hooked.

How does no one else see this ?

Last week with Che vs Revs , it was the same play except he hits ball and no arm hold but its a PK. Makes no sense to me.

  9. Not sure how you show the potential penalty for Miami and not the one late in the game where Vargas gets tripped up in the box, the defender doesn't touch the ball and the ref calls a corner

  10. On the penalty in the DC United vs Chicago Fire game at 1:44 the push in the back came first, so that takes priority. The push was definitely a foul because it denied the defending player in red an opportunity to play the ball. It wasn't that violent, but it accomplished the desired purpose. The push knocked the defender out of position so he couldn't play the ball.

Bad call by the ref, especially since he had the opportunity to review it.

Might be time for the MLS to take a page from the NHL's common practice on questionable calls. In the NHL, plays are reviewed in the "Situation Room" (also called the War Room) in the Main Office where league officials, ex‑players, and retired officials review questionable calls, especially goals.

  11. Its handball 0:47. BAD MLS Referee should call that yellow card and Penalty there. Even in Disivion 6 or No Pro soocer Will call. Hand is hand. But If The soccer play POWER shooting and defencer in Natural position back behind and hit the hand. I will not called for hand. Why, Defence have no eyes back in the head. But sideway on this defencer can see the Miami player was try passing the ball. SO 100% PENALTY there.

LET Me remind…. All SOCCER players KNOW….. HANDS Do NOT ALLOW. ONY Goalkeeper in area ALLOW use their hands.

  12. Is a referee allowed to rule that a push is simultaneously too minimal to warrant a foul but also significant enough to justify a flailing arm? That seems to be the argument presented here on the Chicago handball, but it feels slightly contradictory to me. Hoping someone who knows more than I do can weigh in.

  13. Im mixed on the TFC red bulls one. Based on precedent I would expect that to be called a pen. However, taking into consideration the ability of the attacker to play the ball and instead jumping. I lean towards foul, but only based on precedent.

  14. Wiebe, what are you smoking? You say no player on the field is calling for a handball including the crosser, but the very video you’re talking over shows Ruiz doing exactly that.

  15. When did the official blow the whistle on the LAFC one? If the ball was in play, it was likely in the penalty area and even if that’s an incorrect call, the restart is a dropped ball (to LAFC’s GK). If the ball had gone in the goal, is that still reviewable? I agree that it maybe seemed soft, but I’m not sure that is in the purview of VAR.

  16. Clip 1: Tuff call, should have gone for review. Probably a PK
Clip 2: Hey MLS…stop pushing and grabbing, no PK
Clip 3: Goal. Hey MLS refs, you're not good at your jobs.
Clip 4: Sloppy defending and sloppy attacking. Ugg.
Clip 5: See clip 2 response above.

  17. Nothing new. MLS media and refferes being against Miami since Messi joined. 75% of matches other teams get help against Miami.
    18 penalties not given
    4 red cards not given
    20+ yellow cards not given
50+ freekicks on Messi not given
    10+ good goals dissalowed
    50+ fauls not even fauls
Added time when Miami loosing by 1 goal or drawing 3minutes. Added time when Miami winning by 1 goal 12 minutes.
Refferes and media are total dissgrace and this is one of the reasons why MLS will never be top 5league
