Penso got it right. Evander was tripped. This was a PK.
See it's the stupidity like the "analysis" of Evander penalty kick that keeps me downvoting these Instant Replay videos. We aren't blind, we can all see him deliberately hooking the defender's foot to trip himself. There is no way this is how he runs naturally. Stop embarrassing yourself and move on.
Penso call-going away from goal and dragged leg for contact. Good no PK
Evaner totally toe-hooked the (stupidly) challenging defender's foot. He might as well have been aiming for the three wire. Which itself was dumb because if he (Evander) just stepped over him he'd have an excellent scoring opportunity.
Leave it to a garbage official like Penso to blow it here. And I have no rooting interest in that specific game, but I’ve seen her screw RSL often enough that they include Trojans in their kit when she’s assigned to their matches.
Evander drug the leg and swung it out, initiating the contact.
I agree – to me, it's very possible that that was a foul on Brayan Vera. It's also very possible that that was a foul on Brayan Vera.
What about the goalkeeper leaving his line before Messi’s contract with the ball?
“Clear and immediate contact” then shows an angle at 2:11 that shows multiple inches of daylight
Facts are facts, Evander didnt initiate when he lunged for the ball and pushed the ball forward, so he cant lag he can only try to keep going which causes the leg to stop briefly, meanwhile HE IS FOULED!
On that last one the defender is reaching just like Andrew is reaching when he's trying to justify the hands being out and away from the body and going for the ball
Whenever I see Tori Penso or Guido Gonzales Jr. listed as the referee for an FCC game, I know there will be shenanigans.
I hate Orlando but I agree with the overturn of the penalty. Evander clearly drags and dangles his leg to make contact after the initial lung by the defender makes no contact.
Here's where everyone gets the Evander situation incorrect…the Defender puts himself in that position by lunging in! Evander has NO OBLIGATION to "jump" over the outstretched leg of the defender, and it's not up to the Ref to DETERMINE INTENT. Does he "look" for the contact…possibly, but as the video says there is also contact by defenders other foot kicking his foot into the outstretched leg. Same thing happens regularly with goal keepers sliding in. Same thing happen in the WC to Harry Kane, breakaway, goalie comes out sliding in to get ball, Kane quicker to the ball, pokes it wide just before goalie comes sliding in and takes out Kane's legs. Watching replay, it was determined Kane "dragged" his legs and could have "jumped" over the sliding tackle! Ref shouldn't be determining INTENT. Just b/c Evander or Kane "could have" jumped over the tackle doesn't mean they are OBLIGATED to do so. They were quicker to the ball in each instance, won the ball, the defender was LATE to the challenge. As a past and current striker that has taken many tumbles on the part of clumsy/late challenges, beat me to the ball first.
Love how Messi fans called Ronaldo "Penaldo". The only reason it looks like Messi doesn't take very many is that they don't show up on the score sheet. He misses a ton of them.
I'm an FCC fan and I was fine with the reversal on the Evander penalty. It looks like he dragged his legs to initiate contact.
3:25 for the same foul Messi did not even a yellow card during the world Cup…
FIFA Americas Championship Cup y Americas Club Championship
FIFA Americas Championship Cup
– 16 selecciones
FIFA Americas Club Championship
Imaginen:
Flamengo vs Club América.
River Plate vs LAFC.
Palmeiras vs Tigres.
Boca Juniors vs Inter Miami.
+ Gran potencial comercial y televisivo.
No reemplazaría ninguna competición.
CONCACAF 🤝 CONMEBOL — Una sola gran escena americana.
FIFA Americas Championship Cup & Americas Club Championship
What if FIFA created a new elite competition connecting CONCACAF and CONMEBOL without merging the two confederations?
I would call it the FIFA Americas Championship Cup.
The idea is simple: the quarter-finalists of the CONCACAF Gold Cup and Copa América qualify for a 16-team tournament: 8 CONCACAF teams + 8 CONMEBOL teams.
FIFA Americas Championship Cup
– 16 national teams
– 8 from CONCACAF + 8 from CONMEBOL
– 4 groups of 4
– Top 2 from each group advance
– Quarter-finals → Semi-finals → Final
– Held every 4 years
This wouldn't replace the Gold Cup or Copa América. In fact, it could make them MORE valuable because reaching the quarter-finals becomes a ticket to the ultimate championship of the Americas.
And this could also solve part of Mexico's problem. Mexico wouldn't need to leave CONCACAF just to regularly face South American opposition. They could remain a CONCACAF member while earning their place against Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia and others through the Americas Championship.
FIFA Americas Club Championship
The same principle could work at club level.
Instead of replacing the Copa Libertadores or CONCACAF Champions Cup, the best-performing clubs from both competitions qualify for a 16-team Americas Club Championship.
For example:
– 8 CONMEBOL clubs
– 8 CONCACAF clubs
– 4 groups of 4
– Quarter-finals → Semi-finals → Final
– Qualification based on continental competition performance and coefficient ranking
Imagine:
Flamengo vs Club América.
River Plate vs LAFC.
Palmeiras vs Tigres.
Boca Juniors vs Inter Miami.
These aren't just friendlies anymore. They would be meaningful competitive matches between the two football cultures of the Americas.
The PROS
+ Creates regular high-level CONCACAF vs CONMEBOL competition.
+ Gives Mexico, USA and Canada more meaningful games against South American giants.
+ Doesn't require a CONCACAF–CONMEBOL merger.
+ Preserves the prestige of Copa América and Gold Cup.
+ Creates a massive commercial and broadcasting opportunity.
+ Gives club football in the Americas a true cross-confederation championship.
The CONS
– The international calendar is already extremely crowded.
– Player workload could become a serious issue.
– CONCACAF and CONMEBOL would have to agree on money, scheduling and qualification.
– Smaller nations could have fewer opportunities if the tournament becomes too elite.
– Clubs already have Libertadores, Champions Cup, domestic leagues and other competitions.
– FIFA would need to avoid creating another tournament that simply adds matches without adding genuine value.
Personally, I think the concept is worth exploring.
**Copa América should remain the championship of South America. Gold Cup should remain the championship of CONCACAF. But the FIFA Americas Championship Cup could answer one additional question:
Who is the best national team in the entire Americas?
And the Americas Club Championship could answer the same question at club level.
Not a merger.
Not a replacement.
A bridge between the two football worlds of the Americas.
CONCACAF 🤝 CONMEBOL — One Americas stage.
Nothing from the Union game? Wow!
Guess I shouldn't be surprised a few in the comments thought Evander didn't simulate a foul… but Wiebe you were on the sidelines. Fact.
1:46 he hangs his leg to initiate contact and awarded a yellow for simulation. Fact.
How are you kissing that Evander kicks his leg sideways to make contact?
