Ya, that goal was definitely not offside. The initial play was to a different player. Landon Donavan was right. Once the ball deflects off the defender, it's considered a new phase of play. That's messed up.
Mexico goal was disallowed because the new phase of play as the commentator said DIDN'T start. They treated the header by the defensive player more life a deflection, rather than a change, because it didn't successfully clear the line, in fact the ball went more towards the goal. You CAN be called offside even if the defender deflects it (think about a quick corner kick zipping off a defenders head into the head of an offside player). I'm not totally positive but I think this would make sense

The new interpretations of a defender having to “attempt to possess the ball” is SO WORTHLESS. If the defender played a ball deliberately, it should reset play. If it was deflected off him (like if he’s in a wall) then the offsides positioning isn’t reset. Why is this so difficult?

Landon Donovan may have been a fair to middling player of the world's beautiful game, but penalty records aside, his color commentary lacks both color and commentary. Seriously, of all the bad former player commentators of which you have employed many, he is quite close to being the worst ever. For god's sake, please hire people who not only know something about the game, but can express their ideas cogently and quickly. It speaks volumes that I am ripping him and not Stu Holden who despite being pretty bad at color commentary, can only be seen as passingly adequate when compared to Donovan's poor performance. He isn't. Passingly adequate, I mean. Stu Holden isn't nearly so good as that, I merely spoke in relative terms that by comparison to one awful thing he appears passingly adequate when by every other metric he isn't. So to sum up, first replace Donovan, then Holden, in that order, please.
