Uriel Antuna’s 45th-minute goal was all Mexico needed on Wednesday night to top the United States Men’s National Team, 1-0, in Group Play of the U23 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying. Mexico’s defense held firm and kept the U.S. from getting too many high percentage chances in the win.

This was the closest we got to seeing a Liga MX vs MLS game. This was essentially a Liga MX VS MLS homegrown players game. Yeah, it’s true the US didn’t bring any lot of their eligible talent playing abroad but Mexico didn’t bring any of their players playing in foreign teams either; Gomez, Lainez, Arteaga, Pizzuto, Luca Martinez, and Efra Alvarez are all good players that were left out by this Mexico squad. For this reason I think this game was actually a pretty good test. Especially for those claiming that MLS has caught up to Liga MX, particularly in youth development.
