Alexi and Mosse open the show with all things Messi’s desire to play in the MLS (7:13), including a possible link up with David Beckham at Miami FC. Then, the guys discuss American players moving to Europe (32:18), and grade Christian Pulisic’s performance and Zack Steffen’s Man City first Premier League start vs. Chelsea, and then debate if Pele gets his due as the greatest. The guys also touch on Mauricio Pochettino’s hire at PSG. Looked at in #AskAlexi (01:00:07). Finally, Alexi caps the show with a fond farewell (01:28:33) in another remote edition of the State of the Union Podcast.

As soon as Alexi Lalas start to over hype Pulisic his form dropped.
San José has the worst ownership in North America 💔💔🔵🔵⚫️⚫️😢
I heard that someone who is running for president for Barca wants to buy Charlotte FC if he gets elected so then when and if Messi wants to go to the mls he can go to play for Charlotte
yeah but can messi do it on a rainy night in Miami???
I think Pele and Maradona are G O A T but I also the goal for friendliest right before official matches should not count. IDK why people think goals for competition that no longer exists , do not count. It’s like saying if UEFA champions league no longer exists, Messi and Ronaldo goals no longer count.
USA USA USA USA USA USA 🇺🇸
14:22 It was Madison Square Garden after a St. John's basketball game.
1) Messi
Messi would be mostly “bothered” by hispanics in the pair of cities he would likely reside (95% chance it’s Miami)… Americans that recognize him would mostly leave him alone….
Messi canNOT speak a lick of English, and though modest is hardly a charismatic personality as is Beckham..
In the end, it would be great for Messi to join the MLS while still a competitive player.
2) US players to Europe
Of course the USA is a huge sporting country with amazing resources (as long as the govt doesn’t tax it to death). As Mosse correctly says, the flood of American players will become the new normal… I see the US becoming a regular WC semi finalist starting with the 26 WC, and winning them to become the premiere soccer power in the world.
Most importantly, this new wave US players temporarily excludes the most important sports talent pool of all: those inner city black kids.
As soon as the inner city black kids switch to soccer over football and baseball (these 2 sports are most vulnerable US sport at the moment) as well as some from basketball (there will always be ridiculously tall kids), the USA will produce the most incredible soccer talent the world has ever seen…
Imagine seeing athletes like Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders, Steve Young, Jordan, Kobe playing soccer!! Scary…
Get rid of the pay to play system to encourage working class Black, Hispanic and White kids to take up the game for free. MLS teams are now making money from exporting players to Europe, so that should encourage them to make the game more accessible to lower classes, who are tougher and more hungry to succeed. No more players from wealthy backgrounds like Besler and Morris who turn down moves to the Premier League and Bundesliga because they enjoy their American wealthy lifestyle. The game is moving in a direction where the countries with multicultural populations who have great natural athletes are taking over world football. This could be a major opportunity for the US to leapfrog many traditional powers if they make the game more accessible to poorer communities, especially the black community and train them right.
I am a relatively-new soccer fan, and see the not-celebrating-against-a-former-team as respect to previous fans, who once rejoiced by his goals and will now be bummed when he scores against them. Is not like the player is pulling back and not scoring, which will be wrong in many levels. To me is simply a token of appreciation for old fans.
Messi wants to join Inter Miami due to the weather and Latin culture, New York City is most likely as Man City can buy him and send him to their MLS branch. But Messi in Atlanta playing in front of 90,000 Americans each week would be rocket fuel for the MLS
Messi in the US will force the mainstream America to give MLS and soccer more mainstream coverage. It always annoyed how the press and TV media gives NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB more coverage, when soccer is the most played sport in America, the MLS is the 3rd highest attended league in USA and Atlanta United before lockdown was the 5th highest attended sports team in the US, yet the media still treat soccer like a minor sport. Most people feel there is a US media conspiracy in cahoots with the traditional American leagues to not give US soccer mainstream oxygen to maybe takeover in popularity from the American leagues. What people don't know is the major networks are have shares in the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB so it is not in their business interest to promote soccer where they don't have a business stake in.
If Messi plays in the MLS this will change everything in terms of how big this league is. This might start an avalanche of great players coming to the US to play here. Soccer will be one of the biggest sports in America finally.
