The Camp Nou crowd rise to their feet to acclaim the man himself with a giant flag bearing the world ‘Congratulations Messi’ – in homage to Lionel Messi, the best player in the world and his fifth Ballon d’Or award recently claimed in Zurich, Switzerland.

That was the setting on Sunday night, just moments prior to kick off of FC Barcelona’s match against Athletic Club.If anyone had a sense of déjà vu, it would have been understandable. Messi was already the most decorated player in the history of the award when he won his fourth Ballon d’Or three years ago. Now, at just 28 years of age, Messi has added another, putting some distance between himself and the handful of others who have won the award three times.

This is the fifth such time that Messi has had the honour of presenting the trophy to the fans at Camp Nou. And they hope it won’t be the last.

    Just came back from Barcelona, I was at Camp Nou for the Granada match, at power8 stadium for the 2-0 vs espanyol and finally at this game against bilbao 6-0 this club is awesome and when you are there you realize how much more than a club it is! Messi is the greatest, Neymar is on his way up there but for now, it's still all about Leo! Treble repeat and 6th ballon d'or are both truly a probability!

    A nivel de clubes, Messi es el más grande futbolista de la historia, no me cabe la menor duda. A pesar de todo, creo que éste será su último balón de oro, proyectando lo que viene siendo la temporada 2015-2016 de Neymar, y si consigue ser protagonista en la Copa América de este año, lo veo como el siguiente balón de oro.
