Amazing to think that they didn't expect much from him when he still played in Holland. Ajax signed Mike van der Hoorn instead of Virgil. PSV went with Jeffrey Bruma. He was almost sold to Krasnodar at one point.

They either would not be able to handle high lines like VVD does or would not be able to do it with great but not world class defenders. VVD can do that and do that in low and mid blocks as well as high line defending along with elite on the ball passing, heading and almost any attribute you can name. Ramos also does not touch the GOAT debate due to his rash defensive flaws. I mean, man has record number of red cards or close to it.
Now, maybe Beckenbauer, Hansen, Baressi, etc. were better since I have not watched them a lot and also it's unfair to judge those old era players. So, I should not say GOAT, but the greatest in modern era along with Maldini.
John Terry and vvd debate is so forced. Vvd is just better centre back . John Terry played his whole career in low to mid block while vvd plays in one of highest defensive line in Europe even good centre backs look dogs*it in high line it's so hard to play in High then it is to low or mid block as a centre back and look great and vvd comfortably looks best centre from the past 7 years while playing high line + much better on the ball which is so important in modern football especially if you play in elite team who have most of the possession

What makes VVD unique is the fact he can play with any partner and always improves his teammates
