  1. My honest opinion among the 32 teams going in, the USMNT team wants to build experience in this world cup with its young roster. I am not sure how they will fare or how far they will go but we will only know for sure when they compete in Qatar. It is an opportunity for all the teams show what they have against the best soccer-football teams in the world and world's best players. The best position actually the USMNT placed in a World Cup was way back in 1930 where they got 3rd place, but back in the days there were way less games and less teams so in the modern era, the farthest the USMNT has gone in the modern game is quarterfinal in 2002. USWNT is the elite national team in the world, but the men at best have ranked between 12-15 in the world rankings.

To be honest I am not sure if Greg Berhalter has to work with what he has, so it is likely to expect the team's performance to function as a underdog team. If the USMNT can reach the round of 16 or farthest the quarterfinal which would tie the 2002 campaign, then it would have shown signs of progress. Keep in mind this is the world championship, so only 1 team in the world will be crowned world champions. This team could be used to build up experience for the 2026 North America World Cup where USA, Mexico and Canada will have a 3 way host World Cup with 48 teams. We don't know what will happen, all the teams will try to show how good they are and how far they go compared to the rest of the world.

  2. Reality check – this group of players has never really played well together. The best the USMNT have looked in the last 4 years was in the Gold Cup which was a completely different MLS-heavy roster as compared to the WC roster. The European-heavy WC roster has always played slow and disjointed like this. What got us through WC qualifying was the revelations of Musah, A Robinson, M Robinson, and Weah, with a solid-enough Adams-led defense. And when there is excellence around, Pulsic comes to life and Mckennie stops being a huge liability. That's it. Without Musah, A Robinson, and Weah, and we're listless. Get those guys back and we might have a chance to get out of the group.

  3. Berhalter is in over his head! I’ve had it with this guy! WTF does he mean with “we need to play our game”? What is “our game”? He talks about personality and yet he has one of a doornail. He’s already set up the excuses for doing poorly in the WC!

  4. @2:33 Yeah,.. a 9 doesn't "hold up" a center back/s. They put the ball on the ground and turn them to either score or draw fouls. I guess that earlier comment about the role of the 9 wasn't mispoken.

Access journalism at it's finest. Create a fantasy condition in order to not poke holes in the critically flawed approach under the microscope. Can't afford to hurt the Top Brass' in the feels.

  5. @1:30 There isn't SUPPOSED to be support from the 9. That's a secondary role, at best, and essentially compensation for not having a 9 who can put the head down and cause havoc; demanding double marks at all times. Only after the 9 does that does possession play ensue, and goals/defensive relief follow. Pulisic, for example, only shines in play when he is doing things a 9 would do from the positions a 9 would find themselves in.

The entire team is on the field with one purpose- supporting the 9's drive to beat the keeper. Football, 101.

You people remind of the folks who used to say that JK's teams were flat, tactically unstable and inflexible.. AFTER his sides would go out and boss Euro and Southern sides for whole minutes at a time and make THEM bunker and chase with multiple vertical overlaps and field switches.

  6. Big time. No CCV? No Pefok? Pulisic still being jammed into a winger role instead of centrally in attack? A high school coach could get better results with the same talent pool.

  7. It was a bad week for sure, the worst back to back games we've played since WC qualifying started. It's unnerving knowing this is how we head into a World Cup and there are no other chances to redeem ourselves except on the big stage. We need to rise to the occasion.

  8. The talent is there, lets be real Greg was fired in Europe for lack of offensive creativity hence scoring. How many balls did they feed the forwards in the last two games. Greg is trying to select players that fit his system , a quality coach realizes that he does not have the players to implement his system he will implement a system that will fit for the his player at his disposal. Bora Mulitinovic was good at this. Greg has started Long a player who has been sub par in MLS and has started the last 4 games for the US, why? Greg was the wrong man for this job, Blame squarely lays on him. USA should play a traditional 4-4-2 and use the wings to attack with the left and right back overlapping when the play is on their side. Leave Morris , Long and Roldan off the roster, take 4 forwards.. Greg never played Reyna in the middle where that is his natural position, you play players in their natural position. Greg is the problem , and none of these so called pundits called Greg system out. call him out by his name…also watch how 35% of the roster will be from MLS, ITS THE COACH!!!

  9. The problem seems to be the system. The system doesn't use our talent in the right way. If ggg can not get the best out of this team because he refuses to change his system then he was not the right choice and we will suffer because of it in the World Cup.

  10. I was in panic mode since the federation was waiting over a year to hire the brother of one of their top officials as the head coach… A guy that wasn't even good coaching at MLS level 🤷

  11. Berhalter insists on playing a system that's dependent upon possession and playing out of the back, despite our players not being good at that. Adams and McKennie are great ball winners, but they're not creative. Our GK and defenders aren't great passers. Our most creative players are stuck out on the wings where they barely get any touches. Canada don't struggle to create scoring chances because they play to their strengths. Enough with this garbage system. We aren't good enough to play Guardiola ball. We need to press hard and counter with pace. Stop it with all this boring and useless possession.

  12. Gregg Berhalter's coaching résumé when he was hired:

Fired from Swedish second tier for "lack of attacking play"
Five seasons in MLS (finished 7th, 4th, 18th, 5th, and 10th in league standings)
    zero trophies
    zero international experience
    brother of U.S. Soccer CFO

  13. Ecuador also played Saudi Arabia and Japan during this break and it provided an interesting comparison to how the US performed. Ecuador dominated much of both of those games and created multiple scoring chances in each one. Even Japan struggled to get much going offensively against Ecuador's more physical and fast midfield until after the subs came on in the final minutes (with LAFC's Cifuentes & Mendez, alongside Brighton's Caicedo, all in dominating form). The only reason both games ended 0-0 was that Ecuador's forwards are all currently in a scoring slump and wasted numerous good chances, including a penalty against Japan (at this point they really should consider giving Miami's Campana a shot). This is not a great Ecuador team, but the contrast with how the US performed against those same opponents was quite striking.

  14. Realise that the USA will not be winning a world Cup anytime soon. The quality of pre-world cup games is not good enough. Play some European teams because that is who will more than likely win it. Bit late now I suppose.

  15. Please leave Pepi, Fierreira, Long, and Tillman at home. They may have a future in US soccer, but it's not in November. Then, place the remaining talent in the right positions, at the right times, for the right length of time, and let them shine. Oh yeah, and fire Berhalter. Worst US coach ever…and that's saying a lot.

  16. Are they in trouble? I'm sensing some France 98 kind of vibes here. The 5 yard ball piece reminded me of USA vs. the Czechs in 2006 though. Berhalter's team isn't clicking and he's got some favorites at the expense of some talent needed that are going to hurt them. BUT – it's not just Berhalter's fault. They went maybe over a year without a manager. It's the USSF. Maybe instead of the guys knighting for the women's lawsuit and program they should've been figuring out how to build a better team and play better.

  17. Personally I liked Donovan/Dempsey days the best. Team set up to defend, run/tackle hard, hit on counter/set plays, use strength of few top players, use depth of others to hustle

  18. Paxton Pomykal is the answer to the problems of no service to the forwards and lack of life and movement in the midfield. He is a work horse and something that the current roster is missing. With his energy on the field he would bring the movement back to life and create more space and passing lanes for the forwards to move into and create goal scorning chances. He has been working all seasons long earning minutes. He deserves a chance at the Cup! Get FC Dallas on the phone and get Paxton at camp or we are not getting out of the group stage.

  19. There is just zero fight in this generation of players who now all mostly play in europe. The mindset of the Landon and Clint era had was to fight and claw for everything. The 2002/2010 teams would absolutely smack this team around because they knew everytime they put the USA jersey on they needed to fight. This team seems entitled. If they play with the mindset the older teams did, they could be a force because we all know they clearly have the talent.

  20. It was boring. I lost interest in the game. So many other entertaining teams to watch. Heck, washing the car would be funner than watching the USMNT right now.

  21. THE US SOCCER FEDERATION IS A FAMILY BUSINESS. NEPOTISM NEPOTISM NEPOTISM NEPOTISM. THE MLS NEEDS TO STAY OUT OF THE FEDERATIONS BUSINESS. STOP USING THE USMNT TO PROMOTE MEDIOCRE MLS PLAYERS. ITS DISGUSTING. YOU HAVE THE WORST COACH IN THE WORLD AT THIS POINT. THIS MAN IS CLUELESS ABOUT FOOTBALL. IF THIS IS THE TEAM GOING TO FACE ENGLAND, THE UNITED STATES WILL GET DESTROYED.

  22. Charlie Davies is omnipresent. How does he have time to watch games when he is on so many platforms? Does he have a TV going even as he's on these programs? Respect the hustle.

  23. I never understood the hype of Gregg berhalter and Usa when Tata Martino was the reason that USA won the final. Gregg was never the one and it’s been exposed now because now USA can’t beat Japan and a Saudi Arabia who aren’t Concacaf. He brainwash you making you believe that the reason why USA were so successful in Concacaf was because of him. These friendly games are exposing USA and there true identity.
