Singapore’s football chief has described interim head coach Gavin Lee as a “very, very strong candidate” for the top job. Forrest Li says he will soon have talks with coach Lee on his future to find out what his plans are for the Lions after qualifying for the Asian Cup. He adds that the team will receive bonuses of around S$2 million, and pledges to devote even more resources in preparation for the 2027 tournament. Nikhil Khattar reports.

  1. This is just a small step in qualifying for Asian Cup finals.
Hope Singapore will not be in the same group with formidable teams like Japan South Korea to name a few otherwise we can kiss goodbye in the first round.

  2. Gavin isn't just a normal local boy, his football coaching pedigree has been tried and tested everywhere he's gone. From JSSL to Tampines Rovers and now the national squad. This guy will coach a European club one day

  3. Just because he brought the national team to the Asia Cup Finals in 2027 ? Not the type of experience and knowledge that football fans should know that can lead them to success in 2027 . Get a prim and proper coach with proven records and success to lead the team . Gavin can assist him all the way till 2027 as he already knows the team well , and should continue to help the team , BUT as an assistant coach , not the lead coach . At 35 , why is the FAS rushing to appoint an inexperienced coach to lead a national team to a major tournament ? He can be assistant while coaching a local SPL team as the lead coach .

  4. It's a step-up and not an easy job for the road ahead. The Asian Cup – the big boys in this region are there and some of them are familiar faces in the World Cup. For now, let this soak in first. Well done Lions!
