US Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker joins Gary Curneen to break down what has to change in American player development if we want to become consistent World Cup contenders, not just a team that can make a one-off run.
Matt shares the data points behind global performance (what the numbers suggest you need in the top 250 and top 1000 players), why the real shift has to happen in the player development space, and how US Soccer is trying to influence the landscape without a “telling” mentality. We get into clear pathways for players, the importance of technical leadership beyond tactics, and why psychological safety and fun are not soft concepts, but essential foundations for long-term development.
We also talk about the pressure coaches feel to win at all ages, the disconnect between practice and competition, and what parents should actually be looking for when choosing a club. If you coach, lead, or parent in the youth game, this episode will challenge your assumptions and give you a clearer lens on what great environments should look like.

He repeats what I mentioned in the comment on your Fred Lipka interview… seems things could finally be changing ! 👏👏👏
I loved the "Winning mentality and a Win at all costs mentality." and not wanting to win at the expense of player development. Good stuff Gary!
Gary, you have so many good guests it would be nice if you had them challenge us the viewer on one thing we can do in any way to help improve the landscape of the game. They do give a lot of good info but 1 solid piece of practical advice would be helpful. Maybe at the end of every interview.
Imagine Weston not being a top 250 player….
Without looking at the list I don't know but hard to think Adams, Richards, Robinson wouldn't be close and Tillman doesn't have a good shot at being there soon. I'm sure bias is very high against Americans in any global voting.
Just like the french guy. No one will address the elephant in the room. 200 symptoms described but no diagnosis!
The American soccer landscape is designed to make certain individuals money. Not to produce players. MLS has the entire ecosystem in shackles. No pro/rel, no pyramid, no meritocracy, no financial mechanisms to incentivize player development.
MLS is in the business of making money, and producing soccer players isn't the mode of making money. Winning isn't important.
The talent is here, leadership and culture are the problems. Quit messing with the age ranges—just keep it to birth year (don’t pander to trapped ages).
Pay to play is still a HUGE problem. Youth sports in the US is big business. Currently, you have to be wealthy to get the best training and coaching. This leads to the next issue—parents. Because parents pay so much they are VERY much invested and therefore feel that it’s their right to be constantly involved from the touchline.
This impacts everything from refereeing, player attitudes and a coach’s ability to instruct AND because the huge amount of investment involved just reinforces the “win at all cost” mentality.
