We are bringing the excitement of the FIFA World Cup to our living room with a budget-friendly DIY physics challenge! This interactive STEM game is a fantastic way to keep the family active and screen-free during summer break. We explore the science of inertia, friction, and angular momentum as we turn a game into a hands-on lesson in motion control. This challenge features nine different country flags, including the USA, with flag-matching prize bags that test each player’s precision and speed.
STEM Ingredients and Setup:
– 1 Inertial wheel with pegs – can be custom made with a wooden or foam core wheel with pegs on each side of it or a round pencil poked through the foam core
-A track with 9 ridges for each section, 3’-4’ long, with two rails 2” apart with ridges for each flag section
– 9 International flag decals or drawings (including USA)
– 1 Inertia wheel (decorated to look like a soccer ball)
– Small wooden ridges placed between each flag zone
– 9 Prize bags corresponding to each country flag
– 1 World Cup Grand Prize at the far end of the track
The Rules:
1. Each player takes a turn spinning the soccer inertia wheel at the start of the track.
2. The speed of the spin determines how far the wheel travels over the ridged sections.
3. Players win the prize bag that matches the flag where the wheel comes to a complete stop.
4. If the wheel is spun too fast and rolls off the end of the track, the turn is over.
5. The goal is to master the physics of the spin to land on the World Cup Grand Prize!
