Hudson River Derby & Can Atlanta’s Magic Continue? | Conference Finals Preview

Taylor Twellman previews the Conference Semifinals for the MLS Cup Playoffs!

The book of the Hudson River Derby has 29 chapters in it and some of the league’s most memorable moments have come in this games. It’s safe to say this is the biggest Hudson River Derby to date because yes it’s in the playoffs but more so because Miami, Columbus and Cincinnati have all lost. Both of these teams believe MLS Cup is a possibility.

The Marquee Matchup of the weekend is at BMO Stadium where LAFC will host the Seattle Sounders in a game that has been the top billing for a long time.

Before the season started it was fair to say that both Atlanta United and Orlando City would be in the MLS Conference Semifinal. Atlanta had a star duo of Giomakis and Almada while Orlando City looked to progress from where they finished last season and that was losing to Columbus who won. Yet Orlando City wins only 4 of their 1st 18 games while Atlanta sells Giokaoumakis, Alameda, Wiley and fires their coach Pineda. In fact, A month ago Atlanta United needed a win at Orlando City and a lot of help to even make the playoffs. They only had a 10% chance of making the playoffs on the final day of the regular season.

  1. Just remember this, soccer ⚽ folks. ☝️
    – There is only ONE MSL soccer ⚽ team in the State of New York. The New York City Football Club (Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York). 👈😃👍
    – Also. The State of New Jersey does not have their own MSL soccer ⚽ team. ☹️

  2. Apple TV will never release their viewer numbers, but the low number of viewers for MLS related YouTube videos tell a clear story of how much MLS is declining in popularity in North America

  3. Do yall think MLS regrets not allowing more spending this season now that Miami and other top teams are out? The ratings for the eastern conference the rest of the playoffs will be one-third what they might have been. MLS would rather be a league where anyone with a $10 million payroll has a chance to win the championship instead of allowing the more aggressive spenders build teams that can compete and win against any team in this hemisphere. Miami would do it. So would half a dozen other teams. We are holding this league back for the sake of the weakest teams instead of letting the big spenders build an audience that can generate revenue equal to NHL and help our smaller markets gain international recognition. This league is strong enough to dream big.

  4. Respect to Atlanta for beating Miami. That’s a huge threat gone. But realistically, they shouldn’t have gotten into the playoffs. That McGuire goal on deadline day was not a handball. Even if that is a rule, it needs to be changed as soon as possible.
