How Youth Soccer Actually Works in America (It’s Not What You Think)

You can be the best player on your team and still never get recruited. Every year, hundreds of talented athletes are left behind—not for lack of skill, but simply because of where they play. In this insider video, Harrison Szep (founder of StudentAthlete.ai) pulls back the curtain on how the American youth soccer system actually works—and which leagues truly get seen by college coaches.

You’ll learn:

– The full breakdown of the U.S. soccer pyramid (MLS NEXT, ECNL, USL Academy, E64, NPL, and more)
– Which leagues give you real exposure—and which leave you invisible
– Why two equally talented players can have completely different futures based on their competition -level
– The make-or-break recruiting timeline (ages 14–16) and why most miss their chance
– The myth that “talent alone gets you recruited”—and what matters more
– How to position yourself (or your player) where coaches are actually looking
– The unforgiving truth about lower leagues and what you need to do if you’re in one

By the end, you’ll know how to sidestep the hidden traps of the system—and what steps to take next so you’re in the right place, at the right time, when it matters most.

  1. My wife used to play with Lynn Williams back in her younger days. I never saw her play personally, but everyone I asked including her dad said she was better (skill wise). USA academies sucks!

  2. I literally didn’t play any club and went on to be a 4 year starter in goal for one of the best D2 programs in the country. Tied Marshall the year they won the D1 national championship.

  3. So Americans can't scout in their own country? Fucking hell, lol.

I played in a team from a town of 3.5k people here in Belgium. Rural (for Belgium) as hell.

I also was invited to train with the national team and play in a first division team at age 12. Never made it. I mean most don't of course. But it was fun to have professional couches working with you. Big difference from the couches in my 6th division team.

  4. This is probably why US Soccer will always be well below on international rankings. It's pay to play, which always equals less than the best. In Europe, academies sponsor young talent based purely on skill. The Europe sponsor model will always be better than the US pay to play model.

  5. What is going to be interesting is AI. AI is going to affect what to study in the future. I believe that going to college will not be that important anymore because AI is going to limit many future jobs. I believe that kids will play Futbol but end up going to a trade school to become a carpenter, plumber, electrician or maybe a chef. So it’s not going to matter what level of Futbol you are playing at. Most likely only the top universities in the country will exist and many universities will be closed down. AI is going to change many things in how we see things today and in the future

  6. This is all great information and it's just like any other sport as you move from recreational play, to competitive travel, to college and then some level of pro whether it's baseball, basketball, football, or soccer the odds of making it to the next level get slimmer as you move along. I always enjoy talking with parents who end up spending tones of money because they believe their child is top tier but the hard truth is only a few have the drive, talent, and grit to move to the top of the pyramid at any stage in sport. Sure some sneak in because they knew someone but even those don't go far once they get beyond MLS or other comparative levels of sport. There are arguably 22 million youth soccer players in the world and 3 million between the ages of 5 and 19 in the US. Like any other pre college sport less than 1% make it to that level so in the US that's about 30,000 youth. From college to the professional level maybe 2% which is 600. All sports are fun and it's a blast watching the kids play but the reality is getting to the college or pro level for anyone is like winning the lottery. My advice is have fun playing sports but don't neglect your schooling and ultimately find a trade or get a degree and enjoy life.

  7. The American system is so badly broken!!
The video is 100% accurate & that’s the unfortunate side. What we’re not acknowledging is that only the kids/families with money can play at these elite clubs. Look at the National team players and back trace their steps… $$$$

  8. The simple solution is to get an agent no matter what route you go through whether it's high school, MLS next, D1,D2,or D3 college and get trials all over the world instead of limiting the option to mls

  9. mls leagues is the worst league to be scouted. is a retirement league or not good enough league. If your hopes are to play in the MLS or you ambition your kid to play in the MLS, just don't. is retarded how much frustrating and expensive it is. If you want your kid to have a scholarship for sure is better if you have him join the ARMY reserves or any other branch and for sure his education would be paid for, but hoping to get scholarships due to soccer is selling your kid time and talent short

  10. I played D1 soccer for a University in NJ and I was literally scouted the summer right before the Fall pre-season. I got my bachelor's and MBA, room and meals with a full scholarship. I was never part of any of these leagues but I was so lucky to be in the right place at the right time and pure natural talent. Now in days is who you know and how much money and TIME your parents are willing to spend.
