How I Coach Players To Be More Physical In Soccer

Today I’m going to show you how I coach two players to improve the physical side of the game — from winning duels to holding off defenders and playing with more strength on the ball. These are the exact methods I use to help players compete with confidence and dominate physically at any level.

  1. When running side by side, use the hand (fingers even) in natural running arm motion to push the nearby hip of the opposing player as your arm swings back. It turns the hips and obviously throws your opponent off stride. It's in natural motion of a run so the ref NEVER calls this. One of the best tricks I was taught by an Italian coach and endlessly infuriating to opponents.

  2. My sons u8 team got beat by a really physical team right before this video landed on my algorithm. We watched half of this video together Monday night, and today Saturday I saw massive improvements in confidence on the ball, 50/50 balls, and holding off defenders by getting a step in front. He scored a hat trick. I’m not sure how he was able to soak in the first 11 minutes of this video so well but we will be finishing the rest of it at some point this week (want to give the kid a break, he played great). Thank you.

  3. Perfectly timed, my u8s are struggling with physicality at the start of this season. They dominated last season (had it too easy), and have been put into a league with tougher/better opposition this season, filled with a lot of "academy" kids. You can see why a lot of these kids are in academies, they're hungry and physical. It's come as a shock to my team, a lot of good tips and advice, some good drills that I can take away and adapt for my u8s.

  4. Hey Joner, I really appreciate your videos.

I've recently taken on a role as a coach for U-14 boys second division team in my region (Canada). Do you have any tips? They lack basic ball mastery and understanding of positional awareness. We are playing in a 4-4-2 primarily. Thanks in advance mate and all the best.

  5. SO he keeps saying " get the elbow up. Elbow is illegal.
    He means forearm.
The wording of this message makes a huge difference. using your arms to find leverage and create separation is part of the game. But your first example literally implied you wanted players to smash other players with their elbow.
Don't do that. If the ref isn't stepping in, you'll end up with very bloody ankles or busted kneecaps by leading challenges with your elbow.

Still, the game is not played with the arms. If you need to depend so greatly on upper body strength, you're not really playing correctly anyways. Go play Hockey or Football, come back when you've learned positioning and speed of play. The best teams I've ever played against, I was only ever close enough to intercept a pass or make a tackle on someone setting up for a shot. The player and ball movement was so far beyond the pace of a human making it the few steps to the player before the ball was gone. Hardly any fouls get called the entire game, because there is rarely a chance to even put a challenge in.

That's the level of play I strive to every time I'm on the pitch.
Unfortunately I'm fatter and older now, just play amateur and rec leagues and the other players simply cannot and will not move the ball fast enough, you get so bored waiting for the ball to finally work its way back around to you or come your way, makes you wanna hold the ball longer.

  6. exactly what I needed, never knew that I can push players like that to create that seperation, I'm just a sunday league player and most of the time if I get physical, players over react and get mad.
