  1. Rule 12: Handling the ball involves a DELIBERATE act of a player making contact with his hand or arm.

    Officially it is stated as:
"A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any
of the following three offences: handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)

This means that the first thing that refs are supposed to look at is intentional or not. Later it is stated that things like distance of the play, how expected the ball may or may not be, positioning of the hand, advantage gained, ect. ect. ect. will be taken into consideration.

On this particular play, the ball came in. Waston expected the ball to be headed and it bounced up in from of him. He started to try and move his hands from his sides (a natural position) to behind his back, therefore showing the lack of intent, but didn't react quick enough. At that point, it becomes a no-call. The rules state deliberate handling for a reason.

  2. The fact that MLS allows officiating like that to occur does not say much.  The official who called the hand ball should consider 711 or some other doughnut shop where things move much slower.  Even better, go officiate baseball, that should be slow enough for him.  It was a blatantly wrong call – very unprofessional.  Too bad a ref can't get a red card.  Caps should have simply walked out.

  3. Whitecaps fan here , I actually thought the call was on Koffie , for going through the Dallas from behind. The referee was in great position to see the play. By not moving his arm until it was hit by the ball is similar to moving your hand to the ball. He had time to move it and the ball landed at his feet.
All whitecap fans anwer this question honestly
If the situation was reversed , would you think the ref made the right call?

  4. As a ref myself, I can see arguments for both why it was and wasn't a handball. In my opinion I wouldn't have given the call. It's the last 10 minutes of a playoff match and to decide the winner on such a small error like that is terrible. He blew the whistle right away so he didn't think about it his decision wisely. No point in giving the ref a hard time for it though, we're all human and the call was made. Let's go Sounders!

  5. The bad handball call by the referee , VWC become the first victim in the playoff stage ! A few days ago FC Dallas lost to Portland Timbers at home is a signal to stop the Canadian Team to enter the playoffs. Never see Colorado Rapids playing such a good defence when playing with VWC. VWC played so hard to beat CR and got a ticket to enter the playoffs but they lost to the referee . Respect VWC !

  6. Just going to copy and paste the definition of handball from the FIFA Laws of the Game 2014/15 handbook…
"Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm."
And just going to point out the word "deliberate"…

  7. This match needs to be replayed shocking decision I stayed up till 3 in the morning from the UK to see whitecaps get robbed shocking ref how can you give that as a penalty his hands are behind his back

  8. Sad to see that happen to a team like that. I'm not a fan of both teams but I think that was a bad call! But don't worry whitecaps fans FC Dallas won't make it past Seattle ! Or LA

  9. What BS! That was a terrible call! This is bush league officiating. You don't decide a playoff game with crap calls like that. MLS just showed either an anti-Canadian or a home team bias here. Just like every league the refs call it for the home team or the big US market teams. Not good for the league if they're gonna have refs call stuff like Central American refs.
