All credit to Cape Verde who played with nothing to lose and got the result. HOWEVER:
1. Yamal is going to be exposed this tournament (I hope I’m wrong as I’m cheering on Spain). His creativity can only go as far if you can’t finish a pass in the box (to lewandoski) or be able to switch sides (to a raphinha) as he was able to do w Barca this season.
2. Ferran is TOO streaky. He either catches every center pass perfectly for a great goal or he’ll sky the shot/hit the woodwork (and he did both this season at Barca)
3. Rodri and Pedri are going to have trouble coexisting in the same position in the mid. Both are creative and pace their respective club offenses, but I’d lean a little more on Pedri as Rodri has recently come back from significant injury. Tough call but one that might need to be made as we proceed in the tournament.
4. De La Fuente can deny it all he wants but leaving out Real Madrid players like Dean Huijsen (highest rated CB in LaLiga this year and a better defender than Eric Garcia IMO) or Gonzalo Garcia (a true #9 that might have been able to convert some of those center passes) might come back to bite him. I get it, bad blood between clubs, you don’t want to kill the vibe in the locker room, but PROFESSIONALS should be able to put that aside while playing for their countries.
5. In the end, Spain will be fine but if Uruguay falters in either of their respective games, the final group match between Spain and Uruguay is going to be VERY interesting.
Thanks to Phil for pointing out Spain were super poor and were set up awfully, some key players are not 100%. I blame De La Fuente. Nico Williams has played poorly this season, he shouldn’t be in the starting line up, Pedri was out of normal position, Olmo was playing on the right where he never plays, etc etc.
Cape verde Africa is proud of you guys🙌🇬🇭🇬🇭
