There was a story told by Jimmy Greaves I think . he said if you went down injured the physio would run on and slap you with a sponge soaked in icy water. he said no matter what pain you were in when you saw him running on the pitch you got to your feet sharpish and carried on .

A big art of “the magic sponge” was how cold it would be. The term really started with rugby which is played in fall/winter. The spionage guy would come out with a cold sponge on an already cold and wet day and players would be very motivated to get up and play rather than let the sponge of death touch their skin!
