EURO 96’ highlights: England 2-0 Scotland

Watch Paul Gascoigne’s stunning solo goal, as well as the best of the rest of the action as these two old rivals met in the group stage at Wembley.

  1. Good old days when it was ok to have a predominantly white English or Scottish team without people being offended. Rule Britannia 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

  2. They really weren’t all that brilliant in euro 96 they were great against the Dutch and that was pretty much it I was 6 years old at the time of the tournament , but they won like what two games inside 90min in the entire tournament ?

  3. As an American watching the game since 1990, Gascoigne's goal is still one of the best goals of all time, aesthetically perfect. From keeper, to the one-touch passing, Gascoigne's left to Gascoigne's right, and the volley to the near post

  4. AsA Scot, and Ger, i have mixed reactions to this! What a fuckin player! Attack mid field, in my eyes has produced some the best player ever….. Gaza, , Beckham, Maradonna, Davie Cooper…….. the list goes on.

  5. The filter won't let me write the common word for the main match official, so I'll have to call him the MMO.

Just something I noticed when watching the whole game again:

For some reason, the toss was made near the touchline rather than in the centre circle and after that toss happened, Tony Adams made a gesture that suggested he wanted to swap ends.

When the players were getting ready to kick off, Tony Adams ran into the opposite half but just as he was about to reach the penalty area, he noticed that none of the Scotland players were swapping ends and the other England players weren't following him.

As he made his way back to the other half, he shouted something to Scotland's captain Gary McAllister and the MMO blew his whistle to start the game just after Adams crossed the halfway line again.

So it seems the MMO and Gary McAllister didn't realise that Tony Adams had wanted to swap ends and Adams thought it would be too much trouble to go up to the MMO at that late stage and tell him there had been a misunderstanding.

It's hard to know what would've happened differently if the teams had swapped ends but it's highly-unlikely that the exact same things would've happened but just at the other end!

  6. Gascoigne's execution is unbelievable, but his run was so well timed, like he saw the sequence play out in his head! You see number 8 for Scotland I think it is pointing to his run being made – like, somebody track him!, But it's not enough…Gazza has found the perfect line to receive the ball and then create his magical goal. Amazing it was 😀

  7. If you're too young to have experienced Gazza as a player, it's hard to explain to you how much he embodied English football aspirations in the early 90s. No-one – not Beckham, Owen, Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, Kane – comes close to the impact he had on football culture. He was mercurial, hilarious, and a bit mad. God bless Paul Gascoigne.

  8. I am Croatian, and never in my life (besides Maradona's goal vs England 1986) I saw more beautiful goal than this goal from Gazza, I get chills when I see this, PURE POETRY, genius…pure talent… PURE FOOTBALL. Cheers

  9. Paul gascoigne era craque de verdade. Jogou muito mais que os pé de rato do Brasil atualmente…. Os pseudos craques. 👏👏👏 Live long Gazza!
