After Argentina’s 3-2 comeback win over Egypt tonight in Atlanta — Egypt’s head coach Hossam Hassan walked into the press conference and said something nobody expected.
“This was clearly a rigged match. And the whole world saw it.”
“If they want Argentina to win so bad — why call everyone to come and participate?”
“We have been cheated unfairly today. We have suffered injustice.”
Here’s what actually happened.
Egypt led 2-0. A goal was disallowed by VAR after a minimal foul in the buildup. A penalty appeal for Mohamed Salah was not even checked by VAR. A shirt pull on Egypt’s player before Argentina’s winner — also ignored.
Hassan made the FIFA anti-racism X gesture at the referee on the sideline — and was shown a yellow card instead. A member of Egypt’s coaching staff was shown a red card in the 94th minute.
Three goals in 13 minutes. Argentina win 3-2.
And Hassan’s final words?
“I am not going to watch any more matches of this World Cup. This is my own way of speaking up.”

I'm Argentinian, and I always celebrate my team's victories.
That said, I don't like VAR, the way it's applied, cooling breaks, or many of the other changes that have been introduced to the game. I truly don't like them. However, the rules are clear, and they apply equally to every team.
The first goal was disallowed because of a foul that occurred 90 meters from the goalkeeper and nine touches before the goal. The rule literally states that any foul that develops into a goal must be reviewed and called by VAR, regardless of where it happens on the field, as long as it's part of the same continuous attacking phase. Whether people like the rule or not, that's the rule.
As for the challenge on Salah, it wasn't a foul. Anyone who has actually played football knows that. The defender got the ball first—cleanly. There was slight contact afterward, but by then Salah had no realistic chance of recovering the ball, and the contact simply wasn't enough to be considered a foul.
People also claim that Mac Allister was holding an Egyptian player's shirt. I'm still looking for that on YouTube because I can't find any evidence of it.
The Egyptian reaction is nothing more than proof that they still have a lot to learn. They don't know how to lose, and, as a football culture, they still have a lot to learn about the sport.
P.S. Egypt's first goal came from a foul that never existed.

If the ref had reviewed Argentina's 3rd goal, he would have had to go back to the build-up and find two penalties for Egypt.
Mac Allister pulled an Egypt player and ripped his jersey, then Salah was clipped in the box.
Correct decision: Disallow Argentina's 3rd goal and award Egypt a penalty.
Instead, he refused to review it and handed out cards to our coach.
