While the US faced a great Ghanian team, it was a team they could have beaten, and the game could well have gone either way. Had the US beaten Ghana, they would have faced Uruguay, a match where they would have been underdogs but also a match they could win. Hence, the USMNT had a legitimate shot at making the semifinals at the 2010 Cup. (Ghana went on to get robbed by Uruguay after Luis Suarez, showing the class we have all come expect from him, fisted a ball of the goal line; Ghana missed the ensuing penalty kick then lost on penalties, but that's another story.)
One should remember that the US would not have advanced without that goal. Thanks to an absurd call by a referee with the most dubious credentials, a US goal against Slovenia was disallowed. Neutral sportscasters had stated that if there was a foul, it was on Slovenia.
