USA must have the worst sport systems possible. Even weirder than not having the metric system
I think Promotion and relegation between MLS, USL, USL 1, etc., would really boost the development of soccer in the country. teams would be more inclined to improve in order to stay up in MLS and push for the highest spot they can get on the table, forcing top teams to improve in order to not lose against them, thus pushing each other further and further. We could probably also get Leicester-esque miracle stories, imagine a small team climbing up from USL or USL 1 and actually winning the league against the likes of LAFC, LA Galaxy, Cincinnati, etc. It would really improve competitiveness within the league. It's also an opportunity to surpass Liga MX as the better league in Concacaf since they got rid of their Pro/Rel a few years ago and have arguably gotten a level worse since then. I would love to see my local club fight to climb up to MLS and get a chance to play against the big boys of MLS.
Yes MLS is garbage.
Relegation is pointless. All it does is consolidate power. I prefer parity over making European fans happy.
No one will pay billions to plah where he can be sacked .. unless is chelsea
When you add relegation you get the excitement of results like draws and nullifying stronger opponents. One of the biggest complaints Americans have about football. Also more clubs means more fans following their local teams and create that passion we have in the rest of the countries where football is the predominant sport. I hope they do it. It's an important part of football and it's culture. I think it'll garner more interest over the pond if they do implement it

Look at Green Bay. You donโt think there are a thousand small markets across the US that would kill to have a โhome teamโ for literally any sport. Unfortunately, weโll never know. Too much ownership greed. To a certain extent, theyโve earned the right to be greedy, for having propped up the league for so long. But now weโre entering a stage where the owners are becoming more of a nuisance to growing the game.
A closed MLS will never grow bigger than it is now. Im betting on very little growth even from the World Cup. I guarantee that in 2027 MLS attendance wonโt significantly increase, MLS viewership wonโt significantly increase, and sales (tickets, gear, etc.) wonโt significantly increase. The only thing you can bet on is that in 2027 EPL viewership in the US will prolly see a significant increase.
Iโve got a โsoccer friend groupโ of 7 that I have known most my life. We have all played and watched it for as long as we can remember. In high school, only 3 of us (myself included) followed MLS. The others would exclusively watch the EPL as their league. 5 years later, youโd assume that more adopted MLS w the growth and increased talent. However, I am now the only one (of seven) that still regularly follows MLS. All of the other six still watch an average of a game per week. Just not MLS. Only epl, la liga, aerie a, champions league, international games, and the occasional liga mx. All the other guys will still go to a MLS game once every year or every other year, but only if they can catch a seat for like less than $20. I literally get laughed at any time I mention Iโm watching MLS. And tbh deservedly so. Owners have zero interest in growing the game at this point. Their only dreams for the league include words like โprofitabilityโ and โroiโ. Half em are way too old to care ab anything else. Not sure their heart medication can handle the stress of a relegation fight anyway
There won't be. Its closed for a reason. The MLS is a "club", not an "organization". Factor in the cabal it has with USMNT and CONCACAF nations it would not be in the best interest of the "club" to open the system. MLS knows all they have to do is every 10 years or so bring in a big name or names and people flock to all the while complaining aobut it. Its rinse and repeat fail proof tactic since the early 2000s. This is why the MLS franchises all contribute to the wages or promise "free" franchises to the tailsmans. Its to keep status quo. The only hope is if the USL equals the financial and viewership totals as the MLS forcing a change.
