Discussion on racism in football with Thierry Henry, Micah Richards & Christina Unkel | CBS Sports

After Romelu Lukaku was given a second yellow card in Inter’s matchup against Juventus at the weekend, in reaction to virulent racism from the Old Ladies fans, he celebrated in the same manner after scoring against Benfica in the UCL with no card given.

Thierry Henry, Micah Richards, Christina Unkel and Alessandro Del Piero discuss racism in football, in Italy and what (if any) solution there will be to fight it in the football world.

  1. Europeans will soon realize they give football to the Arabs because of their hateful ideologies, racism and greed, so while the Arabs sell their oil to Europe, they use that money and pay people like Mane and others who face racism in Europe.

  2. I swear, I've been hearing this since kind of thing for over two decades and nothing ever gets done.

Thierry was probably playing for Arsenal and i was still at school 😶.

  3. There are 2 ways to look at this, either Serie A is too soft dealing with racism or the players are.

Example, FIFA banned Mexican fans screaming 'Pxto' when keepers kicked the ball mistakenly believing it was anti gay, its only banter but ok it worked cuz if repeated next match would be played in empty stadium. That could scare the racist fans more than only a section ban.

The players also need to realize this stuff has happened before, its happening now and will continue to happen, you cant change them you can only change yourself. Toughen up, use it as fuel so when you score like Lukaku you rub it in their face. Understand some do it for hate, but others want their team to win so bad they will do anything to make you slip up. You need to block it out, it happens in every sport its competitive, but you are the pro the only way to silence them is to win.

  4. all players that are a threat to your team will get abuse from rival fans. The racism thing is just another form of ammunition to get a reaction. don’t get me wrong I’m not condoning it in anyway and personally think it’s disgusting But tackling it can make the situation worse. I am aware of people that don’t watch the England team anymore simply because they were sick to death of this going down on one knee thing. I feel the only way to stop racism is to stop talking about it and giving it mainstream media attention. let who’s in charge of the football remove these people permanently through bans.

  5. Again, what problem are we solving here? Hurting feelings of millionaires? How about this, whats that important about a game to get paid millions? Are we addressing the real problem? To the people very outraged, how about stop watching a stupid sport!

  6. I personally believe the way racism is being tackled is all wrong, things like having players standing with over sized red cards with slogans on it is embarrassing for the players and the fans at home and in the stadium, things are getting worse not better .It's not footballs problem to solve it's society,it's government,it's the responsibility of each individual. If a team has racist element in their fanbase why not focus on that team's sponsorship, who facilitate their team financially, they must endorse racism if they keep handing over money.

  7. I've watched loads of these and Henery is very passive aggressive not in this he's actually angry but normally hes very passive aggressive 100watch him I'll C hel start sumthing wat me ????

  8. Italy should be banned from the Fifa world cup for 10 world cups. Should teach their racist fans that they might live long enough to see another world Cup with their country in it. Ban all televising of international games in Italy.

  9. Uefa and Fifa dont want to deal with Racism. White people trying to make decisions. Black player gets monkey chants, white executives think that closing a stand down for game will be sufficient punishment? Until you get people of colour making decisions, handing out punishment like points deductions, clubs being kicked out competitions. Also people going to prison as well.

  10. Maybe if there was a standard of intelligence based security measures, where security entities where expected to be able to interpret crowd behaviors and enforce conduct standards.

The ref has a head set and this sort of issue should be communicated to security in real time and the ref should be able to expect players to conduct their selves with confidence in security enforcement.

But if the ref is not part of the solution then he has in a case like this become part of the problem. And the blame is on the Italian F.A.

  11. The best solution is that if a player hears racist shouting during a match, he reports it to the referee, who gives a red card to the selected player of the team whose fan insulted him. If this happens after a match, the team will start the match with ten players in the next match. Who indicates the player ? The coach of a given team says who should go down. It isn't always racism, because remember that fans insult black players, and often there are black players in their clubs and they respect them. But this does not change the fact that racism exists and will probably continue to exist (unfortunately), but the only thing that can be done is to educate whoever you can, and let the rest continue to be racists, but in the privacy of their homes, where no one will listen to them.
