  1. Putting defender taking the penalties was not a mistake, it was a gamble and he lost. Like it was already pointed out, defender tend to take less penalties, so there is less available data to study them. Furthermore, penalties are more mental than technical, specially in a high stakes moment like a shootout in a final. Often the penalty lineup relies primarily on which players have the coolest heads. I think these were the criteria Mourinho used, but backfired. The game was a total rip off either way, even the only penalty Roma's keeper was able to defend was repeated, so there was no chance Roma was winning this, sadly…

  2. Mourinho is not a coach, when will people understand that? Mourinhos way to coach is harassment to all the players asking them to take the ball by whatever means, and that,,,,people,,,, is not coaching.

  3. it's easy to sit after the game and act like you would know what to do. Its could've easily gone the other way and you would be calling it a genius move. That's the nature of penalty shootouts

  4. Alright mister commentator,
    Just zip it.
Roma lost and so be it.
During shoot outs, your best guess are defenders/defensive minded players,
    Why?
Because the opposition goalie and staff already studied Belloti Abraham El sharawey like 100 times. I bet they haven’t studied Wini, mancini and co at the back. It has its advantages, but today it didn’t go that way. I hate when we start talking about what should have been done, meanwhile if it happened as planned, the same us will call it genius.
This is football, SAKA and all the attacking players messed up their penalty against Italy at wembley stadium, that’s shootout for you.
My only regret is why Roma didn’t go for a second goal, that’s what you should comment on and hammer on.

  5. The advantage of making defenders take pens is that the keeper shouldn’t have any research on them, and therefore doesn’t have the advantage of knowing where they’ll shoot.

Let’s remember; a penalty in futbol is like a free throw in basketball. Really, the taker should never miss.

The defining difference is mentality; and maybe Jose trusted those players mentality and they let him down.
