West Springfield, Virginia HS parents upset at a referee’s call. (search for “two balls on the field incident high school soccer game” to see the game film of the incident.)
wonder why there is a shortage of referees nationally? One coach runs on the field to argue with the referee while another heads down the touchline to argue with the assistant referee. After a free kick was awarded against their team and a goal was scored, they complained that there were “2 balls on the field.” Game video shows that none of their players were even aware that a second ball was on the field. They got caught napping on the free kick. This is high school soccer being officiated by high school soccer referees.

I feel like the parents are in the right. Shoutout to the parents for speaking for what they believe in!
if you all think that soccer referees put up with this every game and we want too. think again im a soccer referee myself this is unaccpeteable behavier by coachs and parents this is why we are losing 75% referees per year then we are making becuase have to put up with this. we dont want to put up with it becuase we dont get paid enough to put up with bad behaver!
What a weirdo
Yes and… even if there are two balls on the field, it does not mean that the game must be stopped if ball number two has no influence on the game and the team with the ball is starting a promising attack… Some teams play "tactically " to throw an extra ball onto the pitch and it must not have an impact on the game.
Then the ball is just "A lump" on the field.
But embarrassing behavior from parents.
As a youth soccer coach I always remind my players and their parents: "NO VIDEO REVIEW". They can scream and holler all they want but the call won't be reversed. Move on.
Coach entering the field like that is a straight red. How the parents were allowed the curse like that during a school activity without being removed is also crazy. Gotta show the red cards and clear the sidelines/abandon the match if it gets this bad. Imagine talking to your kid’s teachers like that.
Think about how short life actually is and this is how they choose to spend that limited time??? Very sad…
What a bunch of losers at life.
Two balls on the field in play. Yes, that would confuse the players as in this case it did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_eZqly7JC4
The only thing sadder than the behavior is the size of “the crowd.” These folks are either really supportive, or had nothing better to do.
Things haven't changed in the last 40 years. Glad I'm done with it and now just concentrate on walking the dogs.
I thought they kept yelling, "blue balls on the field…" My favorite part was when Chung Lee started yelling in broken Engrish. "Fruckin' bowshit".
I was legit the parents at one of my college's soccer games last night. 💀💀💀💀💀 lord forgive me for my sins cause i also skipped bible study to watch that game. Everyone was mad at the ref that game cause when one of our guys got fouled, the ref said that the other team got fouled.
Smallest crowd I've ever seen at a World Cup Soccer match
AGAIN PARENTS RUINING THE GAME. NOT ALL OF YOUR KIDS WILL BE SPORTS SUPER STARS,,,SO JUST ENJOY THE GAME BEFORE THERE ARE NO REFS ANYMORE AND THEN THERE WILL BE NOT MORE SPORTS,,,,,,,,,,
“Two balls on the field…..let’s hang the ref.”
Legend has it those fans still think there are 2 balls on the field
I always say two balls are better than one.
“Father of the year” doesn’t even know the laws of the game. If the other ball was not interfering with play, it’s not an issue. What an embarrassment to his kids and those around him. Notice he was all alone at the fence. Apparently the others, while upset too, don’t even want to be around him. Over 15k views so far of his face and shameful, entitled, immaturity.
As an official myself these parents and coaches have no clue on the rules. The other ball, after seeing the whole incident, had no impact on the play, by rule play does not stop and the goal is counted. I would be ashamed as an AD that my players parents acted in this fashion with out understanding the rules. Study the rules before you run your mouth!
We talk more about that game in this podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EypxhwHSUM0
These parents need to find a deeper meaning in their own lives. You almost feel bad for them – if this is how they choose to live. Almost.
can't tell what they are yelling at. Need to see the play.
The parents need to get kicked out and off.
The other problem is the AR, aka assistant referee is there for the referee only. If the referee wants helps can go to the AR for help and advice. At the end of the day the AR gives the referee information whether it be non-verbal such as using a flag for offside or possession for a throw-in. Can be verbal such as maybe the referee missed something and needs to tell the referee information. The referee has the final say and their decision is final whether you like it or not. An AR doesn't overrule the referee. Just is there for information. The referee takes it and uses it however they want.
Refs need to start tossing them
Bro I go here now this is embarrassing
I'm thinking the coach would have been better served by seeing red instead of yellow
I always bring two balls to the field 🙂
Can anyone imagine what the kid is thinking about his dad after he went viral on this video? I want this school to officiate their game, and I want them to behave that way.
Across the country, high school umpires and referees are leaving their offices and homes to go out and work games 4 and sometimes 5 nights a week. They don't work that frequently because they want to, and most don't need the money. They do it because over the last three years 50,000 of their fellow high school officials have not returned to the game. Thus, there is a severe shortage and schools and assignors are desperate. The least you could do is stop one at the fence, and win, lose or draw, say "thanks for coming out tonight."
Ben, a Great example to support your book which i thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you for Capturing this situation! Bob
I am not used to sane and well thought out replies to comments on social media. Mr. Glass, you are an enigma to me.
Because of the location of the foul, I believe the Center should’ve stopped the clock and caution the player who committed the foul. It was a late and reckless challenge. If center would’ve given the yellow. All of that could’ve been prevented. Also, goal is valid. Second call is on the other side of the field and it’s not interfering with the play. Coach was looking for an excuse to justify the lack of attention from their players at the time the ball was kicked. Also, coach had to given a straight red card instead of Yellow for entering the field without permission.
Several years ago the Wash Post did an good article at the end of the HS soccer season here in Fairfax. It shed light on a lot of negativity that was going on in HS games, both on the benches and the stands. After that there was a culture “reset” of sorts… New coaches came in at some schools and, for a while, things “settled down” a bit.
The National Federation of High Schools reports that it has lost over 50,000 high school sports officials in the last three years. Not all were related to fan abuse, of course. Many older referees either did not want to or could not come back from the long layoff.
This videos from the local high school soccer game the other night is my view, presenting an opportunity for a culture reset. School administrators have to get reengaged with what’s actually going on at games. This can be tough, now that we are back to “full schedules” post-Covid.
As I’ve said on many occasions, the high school athlete is, by and large, a pleasure to deal with. It takes one fan, though (or one coach running onto a field) to get other fans to chime in and degrade the game.
Appreciate all the support. I’m happy to speak on this at almost any time or place.
interesting the coaches did not say anything about the extra ball on the field until after the fact and only because they were unprepared and needed an excuse.
Imagine living a life so devoid of meaning that you get this pissed at a HS soccer game.
Funny how the only person on the field that paid attention to the second ball was an attacking player no where near the play. Embarrassing for the kids that belong to these parents.
Yes, there should b no cursing at refs but creepy guy taping may be worse. Address them directly instead of trying to shame them with video. Makes me wonder what other unconsensual recording u do on your spare time.
Greetings from Great Britain. We love you guys despite that incident with the tea in Boston harbour (yes, the correct spelling IS "bour"). We love that you play our beautiful game even if you do call it soccer. But it would help if your "adults" would make some effort to learn the Laws. I have with your sports – I even understand the infield fly rule….
And these parents somehow wonder why there’s a referee shortage lol
The Referees have all the power. They need to throw people out and maintain order. They will all be quiet if they Refs will exert some power. They need more training on how to deal with emotional parents…. and they better soon because it always happens in sports….

When the opponent plays with two soccer balls on the field some people get mad.
IFAB pretty clear about this outside agent must interfere w/ play to stop play or disallow goal. (outside agent can be an extra ball). Someone should show this video to the HS athletic director. Also team official leaving technical area, entering field of play to confront match official (both the CR & AR) is a no-brainer send off – looks like both coaches should go hit the showers. Which usually for HS games results in a forfeit.
Athletics were much better when parents didnt care so much. But coaches have a huge role in this, they dictate acceptable behavior.
Having two balls on the field in and of itself is not an issue. One has to be interfering with play.
Also, it’s not a “side judge.”
Among other problems.
Embarrassing parents
